If you want to know why Christians believe what they believe then this book is the one to explain it all. This is an abridged version of Grudem's book Systematic Theology but it still has plenty of detail to answer why we believe in the Trinity, angels, heaven, hell, humankind. It covers every major Christian doctrine in a layperson's terms. With the questions at the end of each chapter it also makes for excellent Bible study.
I am teaching adults in EFCA church a course on Bible Doctrine. I was so pleased to learn Dr. Grudem had produced a smaller version of the huge and detailed seminary textbook to be used in local church classes for laypeople.The explanations are clearly presented in terms laypeople will understand. I was surprised at the number of people who wanted a book to follow along with my lectures and the various Bible passages. All the feedback I am getting from the class would indicate this is a good book to buy for any student of Scripture who wants clear explanations of the essentials of the faith.The adults I am teaching also are mostly age 60 or older too, just in case you are wondering if it is only for younger people. With all their Bible knowledge, these adults are enjoying this Bible doctrine book.
I have a seminary degree. This is the most helpful doctrine book I own. It is my practice to buy a copy for every person in my church who leads a small group. It's easy to read and understand. I trust it. I use it myself. I have had the privilege of knowing Dr. Grudem as I took several classes with him in school. He's as humble as he is smart. Buy one for yourself and buy one to give away to a friend.
I call this the "Mama Bear" version of Grudem's systematic theology. Not the Papa Bear volumes read in seminary nor the very helpful Baby Bear version "Christian Beliefs" that give a great introduction to basic doctrines, this book is for those who want to go deeper in understanding the significant Biblical Doctrines of the Christian life without getting a Masters Degree.
Amazing compilation of well proven and unbiased Doctrine reporting. If you are a pastor or a lay person in the service of your Lord and Savior get this. You will find it a good read on many, MANY subjects of Bible Doctrine. Many of these are not even touched on by churches today because of controversy or political correctness. THAT is sad, and this can help you and I understand exactly what the Bible says and means! Get one today, you will be pleased with it I am sure.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to study Theology. It is a basic Theology that sets a precedent for all study of any Theology. It helps me develop a closer relationship with God by knowing Him thoroughly. The Biblical verses give me a deeper basis in which to study the Bible and all 66 books. It inspires me to want to enroll in classes in seminary. My Pastor's recommended this book to me. It is not that easy to read, because it talks about some of the deep things of God. It will help me understand these things and be able to discuss them with a mentor.
I've used this as a textbook for my 9th-grade and 11th-grade theology classes. This is the best introductory theology textbook that I know of, especially for high school students. Each chapter ends with a set of review questions, which I was able to use for homework assignments. There are points where his distinctive theological colors show (for example, he's credo-baptist, which impacts his understanding of the visible/invisible church distinction), but he handles opposing viewpoints charitably.
I purchased this for a class at church. It will be a valuable resource.
