This is a beautiful little book. The design, the photography, the overall quality are all outstanding. In its essence it is more of a handbook, but contains all the necessary information to serve as an introduction into studying and designing perfumes. I found the historical context of the evolution of perfumes eye opening (even wished for a little more). I missed a little more information on the famous perfume houses (Guerlain, Coty, Chanel, etc.), but again, this is a small book and could not expect it to be comprehensive. The eight chapters of the book are divided evenly in between theory (art) and practice. The practice part contains recipes for sprays, oils, solids, recipes for fragrance blends, bath and body products (body scrubs, shower gels, lotions, creams), home fragrances (room sprays and reed diffusers). The author is clearly an expert on this topic and makes this introduction entertaining and easy to follow without trying to give an overly simplistic view. Again, I am amazed by the overall quality of this little book.

There aren't a lot of comprehensive books out there on how to make natural perfumes and fragrances. This one isn't either but it comes the closest. I believe the moral of the story is that if you really want to learn this stuff you need to take up some serious studying. However, the book goes into the science, both chemical and artistic, of how to combine scents and how to teach your nose (brain) to discern each one. It provides formulas for various blends and explains the history behind perfumes and perfume families, which I found very interesting. A pretty book as well, it is nicely done.

I thought this was going to be a real introduction to making perfume. It's more like a superficial coffee table book. Good information but not enough of it and too much went into making the book "pretty". Disappointing.

Liked the simplicity of the short featured articles which might entice the reader to explore further into the fascinating world of fragrance. Illustrations were complimentary and tasteful.

It is very informative. The author is very knowledgeable on the subject.

The below is a review of the MP3 audiobook version of this workThis book is an examination of matchmaking in markets where conventional price making does not apply. For example in the market for kidneys, on-line dating services, selection processes used in placing high school students in NY and Boston and universities in general and similar such markets. The book is interesting in many ways. One is the description that Dr. Roth provides on these markets that are so ignored in economics departments. He provides a decent discussion and analysis as to how they work. In addition he provides a discussion as to what variables affect them (i.e., depth of market, speed required for decision making, etc.) and how. Based on this readers can see what constitutes good and badly functioning markets in these areas. An excellent discussion of these, all the more important, as stated previously, that their existence is barely even mentioned in economics classes.In addition, there is also some discussion relating to institutions and how they are important to well-functioning markets in these areas. This part of the book, however, is relatively weak. It is too short and hence lacks the really in-depth discussion that is really needed. This is also ironic in that the institutional structure of these markets is very important to their functioning.Regarding the audiobook, its reader sounds very much like Dr. Roth. This includes his inflexions, tone, etc. It reminded me of him as I had him as a student. The reader probably attended a lecture or two of his.In conclusion, a very good book for those interested in the functioning of non-price markets.

Who gets what and why gives the reader an idea about how careful structuring of a market place can lead to great improvements in efficiency. The field that the author received the nobel prize in has been growing in importance over the last few decades and there is no doubt that design of market places is something policy makers from the macroeconomic down to the microeconomic sphere should care about. In this book, Alvin Roth goes through examples throughout his career where improving market design has led to better systems for people to live in. It is clear and interesting.The book is split into 4 parts, the first is titled Markets are everywhere. The author starts by describing markets and goes through commodity ideas and how standardizing of products leads to markets that are thick. He discusses how commodity exchanges were set up in the US in Chicago for example and how wheat trades enormous volumes in a standardized fashion. He discusses the coffee market as well which is a nice little insight. The author then moves on to discussing the market for kidneys; an exchange he helped to create. Here is where the reader starts to really get a feel for the work the author has done. The complexity in coordinating kidney transfers is real and the construction of chains of donors who could trade kidneys amongst them in a mutually dependent way turned out to be able to save many lives. The author discusses how the kidney exchanges evolved and how improving the mechanisms for exchange was in everyone's interest.The second section is titled Thwarted Desires in which he describes some market failures. The author starts by discussing how in situations in which there is a first mover advantage, market places can fail as participants try to beat each other in order even though by taking such an action they reduce the amount of information needed to make a decision. Such coordination failures lead to suboptimal selections by both parties. The author discusses some of the subject matter of Flash Boys and by that I mean high frequency finance. He describes why the spending of billions on infrastructure for speed of trading which has no real economic benefits are where markets can also fail. Speed of markets should not in and of itself be the desire for market design. The author finally touches upon making markets safe to transact in such that the rules of the market place are adhered to so that people can trust the mechanism of trade.The author moves into the real market designs that are being used by medical and school systems in part 3. He first discusses how the placement of medical schools was flawed and people were being placed far too early but such an outcome was the inevitable consequence of the issues of part 2 where first mover advantage ruined coordination. The author discusses surgeons as well as urologists and how the culture of the medical field can impact the required solutions to the failures of a market place. The author then discusses the school systems in NY and Boston where he had a direct impact on improving. He discusses the preference list that were being asked of students each year and how the back and forth between students being selected and the city system led to congestion that was inefficient for everyone. The author also discussed Boston which had different problems. But in this section the reader gets a sense of how clever design of markets can lead to better outcomes for everyone.The author then gets into some ethical issues like repugnant markets and brings up horsemeat in California as banned due to its repugnancy by the population in California. The boundaries of what should be eligible for trade are contextual to time and place and things like organs for sale and surrogacy can lead to questions about what broad set of values does the population have and given that what should be allowed to be traded and under what conditions. Once we know what goods and services we want to be transactable having the best market designs to facilitate will lead to better outcomes for those involved. The author convinces the leader through the book that market design can be instrumental in efficiency gains.Who gets what and why is very readable and interesting. Rarely do people talk about market design so its a nice change of pace for a popular economics book. I think anyone who reads this will have a better idea about some of what economists look at as well as how market design can make a world of difference to the outcomes of the marketplace and free market can mean many different things as markets are not all alike.

When I studied economics, I thought it was incredible irrelevant in many ways. It just didn't match what I experienced and observed in the real world. Thankfully, since then, the field of behavioral economics has grown dramatically to help explain the reality of markets. That's why I found Dr. Roth's book very fascinating.For some of the markets explored in the book, I felt I almost needed a scorecard to keep track of the "who gets what and why." Far from being a flaw in the writing, it truly illustrated just how complex some markets are... and how increasingly complex some of them are becoming. Pity the poor folks for whom these market situations are an everyday reality. (I especially had sympathy for the parents who had to make school choices for their children. Looked more akin to gambling!)I think this book has some great insight for the some of the new "sharing" markets where money may not be a deciding factor.It may not be quick read due to the extreme amount of explanation that was sometimes necessary to describe the various markets. But definitely a treat for those who like to dig into behavioral economic issues.

Listen here beetches. Read the ducking book. Our heroine, Z, is well written. I loved her character and I loved all the characters. It is a short read though. It's merely an introduction to the world, the characters, and hopefully the overall plot? But for now, it's pretty cut and dry and some of the plots you think were going to continue on, don't. Or at least, I think so. To say I'm intrigued is the mere hair on the camels back. I want more, I need more, and quite frankly will stab a beetch to get it. (AKA, I'm mostly going to beetch in RHRA FB group!)

This story just sucked me in, great chacter and world building. The story is so unique and the twists it takes as it progresses just keeps you wondering what will happen next. I love the fact that a lot of the characters have a disability of some sort, PTSD, Mental, Physical, etc but it enhances thier story. I very highly recommend this book and I will be 1 clicking all the other stories for this series!

This was an interesting harem book...and I have a feeling that her adventures are just beginning...looking forward to the next book hope a little longer...also minor spoilers....I hope Mali her friend finds a way back into Z’s life.

Paranormal. Rh. 7 supernaturals. Mate bonds. Human Assassin heroine. I don't even want to tell you anything about it. You just need to trust me and read it. Katie May has a way of yanking your heart around. Love it.

I found this an interesting read. I liked A well enough, but she also frustrated me quite a bit. I am interested in what will happen next, so I am planning on reading book two.

About the Author

Ian Tattersall received his Ph.D. in Geology and Geophysics from Yale University and has been a curator at the American Museum of Natural History in New York since 1971 and chairman of the Department of Anthropology since 1990. His articles have appeared in Nature, Scientific American, Natural History, and other journals. His books include The Monkey in the Mirror and Becoming Human. However, there are holes in my knowledge and this book wonderfully and entertainingly fills in these gaps. Tattersall not only informs but also knows how to teach. It is fun and exciting to read his book. I highly recommend it. I also thank the author.

Great great book for the layman like me

This is a great book for older children (and their parents). Well written; complete and detailed. Fascinating. Our 11 and 15 year old grandchildren loved the many pictures as well as the text.

The title describes the content accurately, it is well organized, very informative in lay mans language, is printed on glossy paper with great pictures and explores the movement of our ancestors out of Africa across the world. Not too long, a great read.

Ian Tattersall does a marvelous job of setting forth four million years of human evolution. He covers the disagreements among paleontologists and their colleagues, offers up competing theories and, on the whole, does a wonderful job of explaining what we think we know about human evolution. While not overly complex, the book does require fairly intense reading. The illustrations are extremely well selected and presented. I highly recommend this for anyone with an interest in exploring human evolution.Jerry

oneSIERRA’S HEART POUNDED. Her pulse hammered in her ears. Gripping the armrests of her seat, she tried to scream, but no sound emerged.We’re going to crash! This airplane is about to nose-dive into the freezing Atlantic Ocean! We’re doomed!Instead of Sierra’s whole life passing before her eyes, only the events of the past few days flashed through her mind. She saw herself at Doug and Tracy’s wedding in Southern California. Her sister, Tawni, was catching the bouquet. Her good friend Christy was standing beside Aunt Marti, and all of a sudden they were inviting Sierra to go with the two of them to Switzerland.Then Sierra saw herself in California, prompting her parents over the phone as they searched her messy room in Portland to find her passport. “Try looking on my desk,” she urged them. “Or maybe it’s in the bottom dresser drawer.”These suggestions drifted from Sierra as she watched herself boarding a plane early that morning with her passport in hand.Now, here she was, spiraling into the icy blue. Sierra screamed inside her mind. From far away, a familiar voice called, “Sierra, are you okay?”She felt a soft touch on her right arm. The voice seemed to come closer. Sierra’s eyes fluttered open, and she gasped for breath.“We’re getting ready to land,” Christy said from the seat beside Sierra. “Are you okay? It’s probably cold now.”Sierra opened the cooled cloth and held it over her face, breathing in the faint citrus fragrance. Lifting her long, curly blond hair, she held the washcloth against the back of her neck and looked down at her loose jeans. The mustard stain above her right knee was still there in the shape of an ivy leaf, left over from a deli sandwich she had eaten somewhere above Nova Scotia. When Sierra had tried to open a mustard packet with her teeth, a flying blob had landed on her leg. She rubbed at the stain with the washcloth. It didn’t help. The spot would probably be with her for the rest of the trip.Because Sierra, Christy, and Aunt Marti had left for Europe from Marti’s house in Southern California, Sierra hadn’t gone home to Portland to pack the right kind of clothes for Switzerland in August. She also hadn’t been able to help her frantic parents when they couldn’t find her passport. Fortunately, her brother Gavin had located it behind the dresser, and Mr. and Mrs. Jensen had sent it to Sierra through an overnight delivery service. Now Sierra wished she would have had them send a few more things, like a second pair of jeans.All the planning happened so fast. Sierra’s parents had been supportive when she called them and explained the invitation to join Christy and Aunt Marti. The Jensens were flexible, and since Sierra was the fourth of six children, they tended to be fairly relaxed about her adventures. But this time, even Sierra wasn’t sure what she had gotten herself into.Christy pulled her shoulder-length nutmeg hair up in a ponytail holder and crossed her long, slender legs. Sierra noticed that Christy also looked a little uneasy. Maybe she was stiff from sitting on the plane for twelve hours. Or maybe Aunt Marti was getting under Christy’s skin the way Marti had already irritated Sierra.“What time will it be when we land?” Sierra asked,adjusting her seat belt. “Eight twenty-seven,” answered Marti. “Remember, it’s morning here. We’ll only have an hour to make it through customs, retrieve our luggage, and catch our train to Basel.We need to be quick about this.”Marti meant business–all the time. Sierra wasn’t exactly fond of this petite, polished, and pushy woman. Marti had helped Sierra’s sister, Tawni, find a modeling job in Southern California, which made Sierra’s parents feel more comfortable about Sierra’s accepting this last minute ticket to Europe. From anyone else, such an extravagance might be unusual, but with Aunt Marti, money was only a method to accomplish her goals. And right now, it was Marti’s goal to get Christy to Switzerland so she could check out a college where she had been offered a scholarship.“Here,” Marti said, opening her leather purse and handing Sierra and Christy a pack of gum. “Start to clear your ears now. Christy’s best friend, Katie, had broken her foot only a few days before. Marti hadn’t even mentioned bringing her husband, Bob, which Sierra thought was strange. And Christy said her mom turned down the opportunity because she didn’t know how she would handle such a long flight. That left Sierra. She didn’t mind being last choice, though. She was excited about the chance to do some more traveling.“Do you feel rested at all?” Christy asked.“A little. How about you?”“I slept for about two hours, I think. Remember how hard it was to get over jet lag when we went to England last January?”“I remember,” Sierra said. “They say it’s better if you stay awake the whole first day so you’ll be able to sleep that night.”“That’s exactly what we’re going to do,” Marti said, her dark eyes checking Sierra’s and Christy’s seat belts to make sure they were fastened. “We’ll take a train directly from theairport to Basel. But some parts of France and Spain weren’t exactly postcard settings.”Just as Christy finished her sentence, the plane’s tires bumped gently onto the runway, and the giant aircraft slowed. This has to be my favorite series as of yet. Sierra's character is magnetic and her relationship with the Lord is so transparent and real. I relate to her so much. I love this author as well. The Sierra Jensen series is a fantastic series for young girls and anyone who enjoys a good YA (young adult) book. The story lines are realistic and Sierra's character draws the reader in. Clearly one of the foundational strategies of achieving a long life in which you maintain all your function into old age would be to make certain you have the healthiest diet possible.Dr. Fung has done an excellent job at summarizing the best tips in his latest book. What I found particularly fascinating was his review of how much protein you need and the timing of the protein. This is important because one of the keys to living long and healthy is to make sure you activate a process called autophagy.Autophagy is from the Greek works for self-eating and describes a process in which your body targets damaged and defective intracellular elements and sends them to lysosomes where they are digested to their constitutive elements so they can be recycled into new proteins and structures like mitochondria.By optimizing the amount and timing of your protein levels you can prevent activation of mTOR that will inhibit this valuable process of autophagy repair and rebuilding. The mTOR pathway is crucial as it is the most potent stimulus to shutting down autophagy. The key is figuring out your “Goldilock’s” dose of protein.Too little protein causes disease. Too much protein causes disease. What’s the right amount? Too little protein can lead to devastating muscle loss and if you have too much that will shut down autophagy. Dr. Fung provides extensive information on not only how to calculate your optimal protein dose but also discusses the timing. I recently interviewed him on my website and if you type in his name in my search engine you can see his video interview in which he provides some of this information in greater detail.His book also extensively reviews intermittent fasting and calorie restriction which is the only non-pharmacological method of consistently extending life span and protecting against many age related diseases. We all know that clean water is essential for health but he has a large section on how tea is the second most popular beverage in the world after water and how you can wisely use it to improve your health.His co-author Dr. Nicolantonio does a wonderful job of describing the most important nonessential amino acid, glycine and how it can serve to improve your health through increasing your glutathione levels and many vital proteins. So if you are looking for some solid recommendations to improve your health I would strongly encourage you to pick up a copy of the Longevity Solution.

I really, really wanted to like this book. I have read two of Dr. Fung's other books: Obesity Code and his Guide to Fasting, articles from his IDM blog, as well as watched many talks and videos by him on youtube.I eagerly pre-ordered this book, as I was hoping to reconcile the conflicting messages from the low-carb lifestyle community and the longevity recommendations from other books, such as Blue Zones, Brain Rules for Aging Well, Spark!, and Aging with Grace (a wonderful book on the Nun Study). The book sort of answers this question by promoting a plant-based (but not vegetarian) diet (similar to Blue Zones and other evidence promoting plant-based) within confined eating windows (intermittent fasting, which brings the benefits of light ketosis). I like this idea as I find it much less constraining than ketogenic regimes, and I also find it very easy to follow.Having said that, the book felt more like a rough draft compilation of one-off recommendations (chapter after chapter about beverage choices...), mixed in with blatant product placement ads right in the text. I found this very disappointing, especially after Fung's straightforward and common-sense messages from Obesity Code and Guide to Fasting. If you are expecting the same quality of work, you will be disappointed.If you are just beginning your book research into aging well, try any of the other titles I've listed above for a more well-rounded approach. I am not afraid of getting old, I am afraid of getting *old and sick*. Other books have addressed this concern for me much more completely than Longevity Solution. If you are brand-new to Dr. Fung's work, I would recommend his other two titles- Guide to Fasting and Obesity Code (I am not overweight, but read this book because of a family history of both middle-aged weight gain and diabetes, I found it extremely useful for preventative practices.)

Disappointed in Dr Fung! I read your books on fasting and obesity but these book contradicts much written in the other books. I don't recommend it😞

A lot of the information such as calorie restriction, fasting, and some food choices is excellent. However, foods to fight cancer is mostly missing. I would recommend Richard Beliveau's book FOODS TO FIGHT CANCER and checking the internet for articles about food compounds mentioned in the book and how they are being studied in regard to cancer. It's difficult to get everything right and the book's mentioning casein as a protein source gets called into question by the article "A Milk Protein, Casein, as a Proliferation Promoting Factor in Prostate Cancer Cells". Also, the exercise recommendations seem outdated and are missing precautions that would have saved me from needing knee replacements. As author Doug McGuff, M.D. says in his book BODY BY SCIENCE Kenneth Cooper could be called " the man who destroyed America's knees". I think running would be fine if there are sand dunes to run on to reduce the impact on kneesand if your skeleton is perfectly aligned. Also, i would recommend periodic X-rays by an orthopedic surgeon to check for cartilage wear especilly on the nees and shoulders. Resistance training, as well as running, can accelerate cartilage loss. Bodybuilder Frank Zane, a four-time Mr. Olympia winner, has had shoulder replacements.Again, it would be impossible to cover everything in a single book. So I found the book a good read and would recommend it.

I loved this book and was ready to give it a great review. It's about all about the folks who live on Red Mountain. An interesting group and all with a different story. The ending was just awful. Left you hanging. I know there will be another book but to end the story so abruptly was an insult to the people who took their time to read or buy the book. Give it an end and then go on to the next chapter of their lives. Very disappointing.

Ugh! I started out not invested in these characters, but as the book went on that changed. I started caring about some of the characters in this book only to be left hanging at the end. Be warned that you are left not knowing what happens to a couple of the main characters at the end. I hate when novels do not explain what happens to their characters at the end and leave you with everything unanswered! There are a bunch of weird sexual affairs between all these characters on Red Mountain and the ending is a huge disappointment! I am not sure why this book received so many good reviews. Huge disappointment!!

I searched already but there is no sequel for this book. I'd like to know what comes next for Brooks, Otis and Joan. I'm the type of reader that an author would have to spoon-feed his own conclusions to.The story didn't exactly leave me hanging. It seems the serenity of Joan the shaman rubbed me just right that though I have questions left unanswered, I know that everything will be alright.Red Mountain in Washington state is a small vineyard town and as a novel featured the colorful lives of its residents.Otis and Brooks are like father and son; Otis saving Brooks from a sorry life on the streets to help him become an excellent winemaker like himself.Joan is a breath of fresh air to her friends. A shaman who helped people find healing. To Otis, she not only directed him towards healing; she was also his reason to love again.Margot was broken but was made whole again when she learned to forgive.There are more in the cast of characters, but you get the picture. Red Mountain is the story of small town neighbors who each have their own struggles, but like the wine they produce, got better with age in dealing with themselves and with each other.

Seriously, Boo Walker!! I have to know what happens on Red Mountain. As you read this story you become so immersed in the characters and Red Mountain, you almost feel you live there. You love everyone, even though at times you hate them too. So many lives intertwined and all of them are this huge extraordinary family. Miss everyone already, hope there is more to Red Mountain in the future. Thanks for the ride, Boo.

This story held my interest, but I feel there just has to be a sequel. Way too many loose ends. Some of the characters' behavior was so self-destructive I wanted to scream, I kept thinking real people would just not act that way. It had a very soap-opera feel to the story line, so perhaps that is where the implausible reactions fit in. It is worth reading, but don't expect to be satisfied with the ending. I suppose, in a way, that is a positive. I would probably get the sequel (I assume there will be one) just to see if any of them wise up.

I got the book expecting a nice, entertaining story, until I got to the filthy joke. It was unexpected, and unappreciated. I read two more pages before closing the book forever. If there is one, there's likely more. I removed 3 stars for that. I was so disgusted I won't be reading this author again. There were too many characters as well, but I was willing to keep reading since the characters were well drawn and entertaining. I took 1 star for that.

So many books to read and not enough time, so if I get 50 pages into a book and feel bored, I don't finish. Such was the case with Red Mountain. Luckily, it was free. Perhaps if the description would have made it clear this was a romance, I wouldn't have even tried to read it.
