It is a direct translation with no commentary to establish context beyond the raw text itself. The raw text was clear and open for researchers to establish context themselves. With commentary would have increased rating.

From the Inside Flap

Illustrated in black-and-white. This ingenious fantasy centers around Milo, a bored ten-year-old who comes home to find a large toy tollbooth sitting in his room. Joining forces with a watchdog named Tock, Milo drives through the tollbooth's gates and begins a memorable journey. He meets such characters as the foolish, yet lovable Humbug, the Mathemagician, and the not-so-wicked "Which," Faintly Macabre, who gives Milo the "impossible" mission of returning two princesses to the Kingdom of Wisdom.

When we started picking our own books out of the library to read during elementary school, The Phantom Toolbooth is one of the first books I chose, and it's always stuck out in my mind, now as an adult on a reread, this is still lovable read that I can recommend for all ages.Milo, a child who can't see the point in learning or having fun, comes home from school one day to find he has received a special toolbooth as a gift from a mysterious stranger. Using it, he travels to a wonderful land of fascinating places, and people who are both like nothing you've seen before and exactly like what you would expect. The wordplay in this book is top-notch, and makes for something a person of any age can enjoy reading. I politely suggest you get started immediately.

I don't care what it says on the cover, if this is ONLY a book for children, I'm a circus acrobat. And since I'm a 66 yr. old crippled lady and NOT a circus acrobat, this must not be a book just for children. What is it? It's a wonderful collection of delightful play with words and numbers, puns and logic, profound insights and pure fun. Milo is a boy who is ALWAYS bored. Then, one day he comes home from school to find The Phantom Tollbooth, with directions for assembly, a book of rules, maps, and two coins for the toll. Luckily, Milo also has a driveable toy electric car, so, after the tollbooth is together, he gets in his little car, drops in one of the coins, and off he goes, looking for something that he hopes might not be boring. And so he goes, having fun times, meeting creatures we all know...a dog with a clock for a body (a watch dog, of course), a large bug that brags without reason and claims always to know the answers (a humbug). He goes to a banquet, but has to eat his words, and wishes he had given a shorter and yummier speech. If I started telling you all the delightful word play I would have to eventually copy the entire book. The author does a magnificent job and his love of words is obvious. No phrase is too small to take literally or juggle into new meanings. Yet, even in the happy lands of Dictionopolis and Digitopolis....a city that uses numbers like Dictionopolis uses words...there is a problem. Throughout the entire Empire of Wisdom, there is no Rhyme or Reason, who were exiled. Milo, Tock, the watchdog, and the Humbug, start off to bring Rhyme and Reason back to the Empire of Wisdom. They have, of course, many adventures, but the mission doesn't actually become dangerous until they reach the Mountains of Ignorance, where they are beset by terrible demons: the Everpresent Wordsnatcher, who constantly interrupts, the Terrible Trivium, who wastes time doing unimportant, repetitive tasks, the Senses Taker, who wastes time filling out forms with useless information until the person is too bored to go do something more important, the long-nosed, green-eyed, curly-haired, wide-mouthed, thick-necked, broad-shouldered, round-bodied, short-armed, bowlegged, big-footed monster, who is, of course, none of these things, and is, in real life, the Demon of Insincerity. There are too many demons and monsters to mention here, but everyone is a demon you will recognize from your own life, slowing you down, wasting your time, and trying to confuse you. After a couple of close calls, the three make it to The Castle In The Air and rescue the sisters, bringing Rhyme and Reason back to the Empire of Wisdom. There is much celebration, but Milo, worried that he has been away for so long, gets back in his little car and returns home, where only an hour has passed and the only thing that has changed is Milo, himself, who is no longer bored. It's a marvelous book, quite suitable for children...none of the "demons" are scary to the youngest child, but I honestly don't believe a child can really appreciate the book's play with words, phrases and numbers. You would have to stop and explain a lot. I'd wait until my kid had a good grounding in the English language before I'd give her this book and, if she didn't like it, I'd try again a few years later. But don't forget to read it yourself. This is one of my favorite books of all time, and five stars just aren't enough to rate it with.

My first love. And to be honest, if you asked what my favorite book is, as long as I didn't pause to censor myself and choose another more "age appropriate" selection, this would still be my answer. If you want philosophy suitable for a young mind, this is excellent. If you're not above reading a "children's book" if you're not a child, it's still great philosophy, mythology, word play, and creative genesis. Sure, as a society we first need to learn rules, what things mean. But once the rules are learned then you need to learn when they should be broken. Not everything has to make rigid sense. Once a surface meaning is discovered you don't quit searching, you can keep digging for the underlying meaning and learn more about the world and more about yourself. This is like beginner semiotics, early lessons in meaning-making. Sometimes watches tick. Sometimes they tock. Also it's fun!

At 10 years old, this was the first book that ever truly seemed to speak my language. Two decades later, I still feel a measure of understanding, and being understood, when I read "The Phantom Tollbooth".

I remember adoring this book when I first encountered ir, but I hadn't read it in forever. I am delighted that the Suck Fairy (who visits beloved childhood books and turns them into utter tripe that can't have been the same book it was before!) has been nowhere near this book; it is just as delightful and whimsical and wonderful as it has always been. And it ages well -- nothing about it feels dated or irrelevant.Especially if you are an incorrigible punster (do not incorrige), read this book. It is well worth it.

My philosophy professor made us read this book because it does an excellent job of discussing the Two Cultures debate. I was really impressed by how Norton Juster took a complex topic and made it a fun and clever children's book. I was really blown away by all the symbolism. This book was just chalk full of meaning and references. I loved it.

The Phantom Tollbooth is the book I wish my parents had read to me when I was a child. This book explores English and mathematics, and connects them together in a world of their own. A world filled with puns and wordplay.Milo is filled with ennui, and can find nothing that interests or excites him. The arrival of a cardboard tollbooth and little electric car send him into a world of adventure and exploration where his expectations are overturned. His traveling companion is Tock, a dog with a clock in it's middle. He turns out to be both lovable, and offers often dry comments on the situation at hand. I never warmed up to the Humbug, who seemed to me to be part snake oil salesman. Yet he has his lovable moments. If you have not read this book to your child, or have not given it to him or her to read on their own, then I think they are sadly deprived children.

Great book that highlights the importance of many life lessons and skills, such as forethought, motivation, decision-making, solid reasoning, and word choice. Presented in a way that is humorous to children, but does not "preach". It is full of puns, which is better for 3rd grade level and higher. Lots of great vocabulary.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5), by J. K. Rowling

Amazon.com Review

As his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry approaches, 15-year-old Harry Potter is in full-blown adolescence, complete with regular outbursts of rage, a nearly debilitating crush, and the blooming of a powerful sense of rebellion. It's been yet another infuriating and boring summer with the despicable Dursleys, this time with minimal contact from our hero's non-Muggle friends from school. Harry is feeling especially edgy at the lack of news from the magic world, wondering when the freshly revived evil Lord Voldemort will strike. Returning to Hogwarts will be a relief... or will it? The fifth book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series follows the darkest year yet for our young wizard, who finds himself knocked down a peg or three after the events of last year. Somehow, over the summer, gossip (usually traced back to the magic world's newspaper, the Daily Prophet) has turned Harry's tragic and heroic encounter with Voldemort at the Triwizard Tournament into an excuse to ridicule and discount the teen. Even Professor Dumbledore, headmaster of the school, has come under scrutiny by the Ministry of Magic, which refuses to officially acknowledge the terrifying truth that Voldemort is back. Enter a particularly loathsome new character: the toadlike and simpering ("hem, hem") Dolores Umbridge, senior undersecretary to the Minister of Magic, who takes over the vacant position of Defense Against Dark Arts teacher--and in no time manages to become the High Inquisitor of Hogwarts, as well. Life isn't getting any easier for Harry Potter. With an overwhelming course load as the fifth years prepare for their Ordinary Wizarding Levels examinations (O.W.Ls), devastating changes in the Gryffindor Quidditch team lineup, vivid dreams about long hallways and closed doors, and increasing pain in his lightning-shaped scar, Harry's resilience is sorely tested. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, more than any of the four previous novels in the series, is a coming-of-age story. Harry faces the thorny transition into adulthood, when adult heroes are revealed to be fallible, and matters that seemed black-and-white suddenly come out in shades of gray. Gone is the wide-eyed innocent, the whiz kid of Sorcerer's Stone. Here we have an adolescent who's sometimes sullen, often confused (especially about girls), and always self-questioning. Confronting death again, as well as a startling prophecy, Harry ends his year at Hogwarts exhausted and pensive. Readers, on the other hand, will be energized as they enter yet again the long waiting period for the next title in the marvelous, magical series. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

SPECIAL NOTE: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases (with the exception of changing all "Philosopher's Stone" mentions to "Sorcerer's Stone"). So far, I have noticed the following: (EU/US) dialling / dialing; Shan't! / Won't!; sherbet lemon / lemon drop; motorbike / motorcycle; and dustbin / trashcan. For many purists of the series who never liked the idea of modifying the original text for an American audience, this is a good thing. Good or bad is naturally for each reader to decide--just know, if you plan to read the books while listening to Jim Dale's audiobooks, you'll notice a few superficial differences. The quality of this new illustrated edition is phenomenal. I've been excited about the release of this book since it was announced, but I never expected the book as a whole to be so well crafted.A couple of things to note:1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy red hardback with gold lettering on the spine.2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.3. All chapter intros are illustrated.4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains".I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. If this book is a demonstration of what is to come with the illustrated editions for the rest of the series, we're all in for six more impeccable treats.

I LOVE THE STORY. Illustrations are great. PROBLEM is that the book came missing pages 153-168 because 137-152 were printed twice. It took me a week to realize this. You will want to check your books. I'm sure Amazon will take care of me but thank goodness I wasn't gifting this.

These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.

I think this is my third reading of the Harry Potter series. The first time is a precious memory to me. Our four children would all climb into our king size bed before bedtime and we would read one or two chapters each evening. We homeschooled so, as each child's reading progressed, they read a part too. Their mom died. They're in late 20s now. Five grandkids. Those will be ready to read to before we know it. But life is not always neatly packaged. I married a widow and moved us all. Today they are off to their own lives. My four and I are scattered across four states and even overseas. So, I'm reading to myself now. I can't make a stronger recommendation than to say that I immediately purchased "The Order Of The Phoenix" after finishing this one. I also have the set in hardbound on the bookshelf beside me. But Kindle is just too convenient. *smile*

My husband tried to surprise me with this order, but we share the amazon account ;)I WAS surprised though, because I didn’t realize it would be textbook size with all these amazing scenes drawn out. They’re AH-MAY-ZING drawings!! If you love Harry Potter, you will love these books. For some reason, hubs couldn’t find the first and second of the series (I did ;p) so he bought the third first, but we know the stories by heart so it doesn’t matter to me. I hope they put out all of them! It almost feels like how I felt waiting for the actual series to come out.

This review is for the Kindle in Motion version of this book. What a delight it has been so far reading this version. The animated artwork is a wonderful addition and it really helps with the visuals in your head. There is a hardcover version of this exact book with the same artwork available. But for the price of $9.99, I think this Kindle in Motion version is well worth it. The hardcover version certainty would be a nice addition to any collection, but this Kindle version with its animations is really something special. Almost like reading the Daily Profit with its moving pictures. I really hope Kindle in Motion continues with the other books in the series as they are very fun to read. All in all, I highly recommend this specific Kindle version. Really, if you're going to shell out $8.00 anyway for the regular Kindle version, why not just go ahead and get this one. Its so much better for just a few dollars more.

I just received my flash cards and my first thought was "man, these things are huge," then I realized they are designed for a music teacher to teach a class with. I bought them because I am teaching my self to read music so the biggest draw back for me is that the "answer" on the back corner is just a picture of what is on the front cover, not the note timing and letter. I am not sure if I will go through and add that information or not. The cards are very nice and well made, but if I remember correctly, even the math cards we used when I was in elementary school had the answer in the corner, not just a picture of the problem from the front. This makes it less practical to have someone help me with my self teaching since they would probably have less music knowledge than I do (which is not much).

I actually wish there were a few more complicated rhythms here, or maybe some longer exercises, but these work very well for what they are.

I like the fact that the Alto (C) clef is included, but I would still like to be able to design my own Professional looking Flashcards. If I could tailor the cards to the way that I teach, my students would find them much more accessible. They usually end up making their own with oversized recipe cards. I keep these in my desk for those minutes that would not otherwise be crammed full of instruction. After all, my student's time is worth money. I owe them.

The product description is very much incomplete. These flash 'cards' are actually quite large, much bigger than index cards, which is typically the size I encounter for most flashcards. I'm also turned off by how flimsy the paper is. Additionally, the flashcards are more geared toward educators or teachers in a school classroom and are less than desirable for personal use. I teach privately and have new students use flashcards to get acquainted with reading the staff. With these, however, the answer to the note name is not found on the opposite side; instead is another note-to-be-named. So, if I have a student use these for their daily private study, it is not the most efficient or useful method. On another note, these cards are a part of a whole system - meaning that you'd have to be several other sets of cards and even CDs to actually get a thorough approach (and thus have to spend a lot more money). Again, this is far from what I expected them to be - simple, honest, complete, flashcards.

I was disapointed in these flashcards. They have a lot of good information and are very easy to read. However, the way that the answers are presented on the reverse side, they can only be used with a student-teacher or student-music knowledgable person. The student can not check themselves, nor can a non-muscian parent use them to work with the student.

I use these often with my piano students! They are useful flashcards to reinforce rhythm reading.

I use the rhythms for my 2nd and 3rd grade music classes in regards to the easier rhythm combos. I like these cards. Highly recommend

This was a slight disappointment when I received the flash cards. I bought them to teach my eight year old daughter the musical notes. The flash cards had a note on one side for her to look at and a small one on the reverse for me to look at. The only problem is I don't know the notes either so when she guessed at the note I didn't know if it was right or not. I had to manually look up all 93 cards and write the answer on the back so I would know whether she was correct or not. Other than that I was happy with the product.
