Review

“While you might not agree with Yaron Brook and Don Watkins, it is all but certain that you will learn from them. I certainly did, and I have a newfound appreciation for free market ideals.” ―The Washington Times“Very good and very informative… the beauty of Free Market Revolution is that it reminds readers that using the government to take care of your needs is no different than going next door to steal from your neighbor.” ―Forbes.com“A joy to read. Even as it merges hefty philosophical arguments, detailed discussions of key economic concepts, and numerous historical examples, its light and breezy prose enables quick reading...Free Market Revolution could not have come at a better time.” ―The Objective Standard“An intriguing gauntlet and a challenge to conventional political wisdom and philosophical underpinnings… This "revolution" will inflame many and embolden others, but that is not all bad…Recommended.” ―Choice“Free Market Revolution will raise the ire of every statist, socialist and crony capitalist. Rand understood - as do the authors of this all-too-timely book - that free markets are, indeed, moral while Big Government is manifestly not.” ―Steve Forbes“A powerful and unapologetic case in support of capitalism. For those who think more government will solve our nation’s problems, Free Market Revolution will open your eyes. For those who can already see the light, it will sharpen your vision.” ―Peter Schiff, CEO of Euro Pacific Capital, Inc., host of the Peter Schiff Show on www.SchiffRadio.com, and author of The Real Crash: America’s Coming Bankruptcy―How to Save Yourself and Your Country“Free Market Revolution is must-reading for an age in which the government seems to be treating Atlas Shrugged not as a warning, but as a how-to manual.” ―Glenn Reynolds,“Free Market Revolution is a potential game-changer. Brook and Watkins dismantle the myth that free markets are responsible for today's ills, and they teach us how to take the moral high ground in the fight against Big Government. If there are any Occupiers left, this book should make them lay down their signs in surrender. Anyone who wants to understand why we have strayed so far from the Founders' ideals, and how we can find our way back, should read this book.” ―Mallory Factor, Founder, Mallory Factor, Inc., and Professor of International Politics at The Citadel“This book is a must read for anyone concerned about the demonization of capitalism and deification of collectivism. Yaron Brook and Don Watkins meld philosophy with practicality in their cogent analysis of how Ayn Rand's moral defense of capitalism can bring down the limitless growth of government and restore its original, intended purpose--protection of individual rights. Changing the trajectory of the country calls for a long and intense fight with very steep odds against victory. But the concept of the Free Market Revolution, celebrating the individual pursuit of rational, long-term self interest as a virtue, provides the arsenal for the assault. And Brook and Watkins give a battle plan of surefire approaches to limit, and then eliminate, even such massive incursions as the government's takeover of healthcare.” ―Jim M. Kilts, Former CEO of Gillette Company“The most important issue in our society today is the morality of capitalism. Free Market Revolution lays bare how capitalism is the only economic system consistent with man's nature as a thinking being who must act in his long term rational self-interest to survive and prosper. This is an important book which integrates philosophical ideas with their real world consequences.” ―John A. Allison, Retired Chairman & CEO, BB&T Corporation“Free Market Revolution: How Ayn Rand's Ideas Can End Big Government is very welcomed indeed. With clarity and courage Brook and Watkins present?the basic teachings of free market economics, and place them within the?context of Ayn Rand's broader moral-philosophic system. As the problems?with government intervention into the free market become more and more?evident to larger segments of the population, Ayn Rand's writing, especially her epic Atlas Shrugged, takes on a new life for a new generation.” ―Peter J. Boettke, Professor of Economics, George Mason University

Yaron Brook and Don Watkins manage to do a lot in about 200 pages: Present a clear explanation why we do not have capitalism at present, what capitalism is, what capitalism is not, what capitalism requires and how to solve its challenges which capitalism's opponents insist require government regulations. Free Market Revolution presents incisive analysis of both the welfare and regulatory state but more importantly, it explains the root cause of the many problems of our current mixed system. That cause is not any kind of market failure, or greed but a certain dominant moral perspective that regards self-interest as evil and altruism as good. Using Ayn Rand's ideas to provide principled answers to common objections, the authors present extensive evidence to support their case ranging from historical examples to events coming from recent headlines. The book shows how we can and should move toward laissez faire capitalism and why government will continue to grow if we don't.

If you consider yourself a moderate Democrat or Republican, do us all a favor and read this book! Let me explain why...Almost every current article that mentions Ayn Rand starts with one of two a-priori points of view: leftists label her as radical right, and rightists will typically say they found her inspiring in their youth, but have since outgrown her. Most people have read one of her novels in high school or college, and assume that it portrays a historical reality of some past and irrelevant era. That her heroes were too idealistic. That the ills of western society, which she describes so powerfully, must have since been fixed. Very few readers actually graduate to reading her philosophical books like "Capitalism, The Unknown Ideal", "The Virtue of Selfishness", "Philosophy, Who Needs It", "The Romantic Manifesto", etc. where she derives, from first principles, the only true foundation upon which a free and moral society can function. This book is perfect for those who have read one of Ayn Rand's books long ago, and wonder whether and how it applies to today's political, economic and moral reality. In fact, I would say that most readers will gain a completely new perspective on today's economy and politics from this book. I bought the Kindle version first, but then I bought a physical copy as well, just to have on the shelf, to leaf through for reference.Brook and Watkins start out by analyzing the true causes of the financial crisis. If you bought into the shameless propaganda of the last few years that sought to vilify and scapegoat the "greedy unregulated bankers" as the creators of the crisis, and the government as the "rescue squad" that has saved you from their claws, then please give these two great writers a chance to prove to you just how detached that view is from reality. But don't rush to write this book off as a "Republican Manifesto" either. Far from it! Ayn Rand's philosophy is the true foundation upon which a moral and just capitalist society can be constructed, and the authors show, step-by-step, how her philosophy applies to very concrete current issues like: Taxes, Welfare, ObamaCare, Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, etc. The book is clear, concise, it flows well, and does not sweep any issue under the rug.The main point I want to make here is that the view of Ayn Rand as "far right" is actually very misleading. If you look up her views on any given issue (which you can easily do at aynrandlexicon.com), you will find that she is way way to the left of most Republicans. Her views on Gun Control, Abortion, Freedom of (and from) Religion, Women's Rights, Gay Rights, Minority Rights, etc. fit much more into the Democratic camp than even the moderate part of the Republican camp (let alone the far right). In fact, I believe that an Ayn Rand political party, if one were to ever emerge, will grow out of the right of the Democratic party (those who abandon socialism) and from the left of the Republican party (those who abandon conservatism). This is why I view Ayn Rand as "The New Middle".So, like I said in the beginning, if you consider yourself a moderate Democrat or Republican, do us all a favor and read this book!

Ignorance of economics and the functioning of the free market is widespread in today's culture, including the pundits in the media that supposedly present the state of the global economy to the "general public". Even the economists trained in our universities, not surprisingly in my estimation, demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of what makes economic growth possible and what is required to restore this growth in the midst of a global sinking of economic activity."Free Market Revolution" is truly a revolutionary exposition of the myths about capitalism and the free market that pervade today's culture. Yaron Brooks and Don Watkins explain these myths and misconceptions in a clear, rational, and logical sequence, and they help the reader understand how a "middle ground" between a laissez-faire economy and an entitlement state is unsustainable.I applaud the effort by the authors, and I wish that every voter in the election this November will read this book before walking into the voting booth, because our society has run out of time, and its future will be decided in a few days.Although the alternative to Obama's statism is not consistent or does not even offer a powerful vision of what our ultimate objective should be, it is clear that an Obama second term will seal our fate for decades. This book clearly defines our objectives as required for economic growth, and outlines a path for achieving them.

Raise kids from birth to be self sacrificial? CheckDumb them down in government schools? CheckGrow up and watch 99% of movies and shows that say mankind is evil, and especially businessmen... Glengarry Glen Ross, Wall Street, Rogue Trader, Boiler Room, The Wolf of Wall Street, Wall Street 2, Margin Call, Too Big to Fail, Resident Evil series, Alien series, Blade Runner, RoboCop series, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The 6th Day, Inception, The Other Guys, Avatar, Superman: The Movie (1978), The Fifth Element, The Pelican Brief, The Constant Gardener... The list goes on and on and on and on.... Check.Have the government pay for and back loans so everyone can be shuffled off to Marxist professors... Check.Read this book and think for yourself? Review

“Powerful . . . Brown calls on readers to live their professed ideals rather than simply state them.”—Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)"Takes readers on a journey through the racial divide in a way we've truly never seen before. Powerful, haunting, and absolutely impossible to put down, [Brown's] account of what it's like to grow up black, middle-class, and female in modern America is not to be missed."—PopSugar, "Best New Books to Read in May""A deeply personal celebration of blackness that simultaneously sheds new light on racial injustice and inequality while offering hope for a better future."—Shondaland, "12 New Books to Add to Your Reading List This May""Moves the race conversation forward . . . Brown offers a powerful perspective on race with her first-hand account." —WNYC.org"I read Austin Channing Brown’s incredible book in one sitting. This is one that every black woman needs to read to be validated and every white person needs to read to receive some perspective . . . Brown has concisely articulated the burdens, questions, and frustrations that I find myself experiencing daily as a black woman."—Sojourners"What a stunning debut from a seasoned racial justice leader. Austin does double duty by fiercely affirming blackness while simultaneously unveiling and demystifying the subtle effects of white supremacy among Christians. I trust Austin, I listen to Austin and I learn from Austin. I hope you will too."  —Christena Cleveland, professor at Duke University and author of Disunity in Christ   “Austin Channing Brown introduces herself as a master memoirist, delivering a manifesto on racism in America that will live on shelves besides Ta-Nehisi Coates and Michelle Alexander. This book will break open hearts and minds. It’s an example of how one woman can change the world by telling the truth about her life with unflinching, relentless courage.” —Glennon Doyle, bestselling author of Love Warrior and Carry On, Warrior, and president of Together Rising    “I have laughed, I have held back tears, I have reflected with joy, hope, and hurt while reading. Austin captures perfectly the sentiment of many black people in America. She’s not only telling her story, she’s telling our story. Austin is a gift to the body and the culture.” —Lecrae, Grammy award-winning artist and bestselling author of Unashamed   “Austin is one of my most important teachers. I’m Still Here is devastating, beautiful, and haunting and it leaves no room for a tepid reaction. Her crystal clear voice will move you, push you, and break your heart. Prophetic and tender, I plan to put this book in every pair of hands I know and join her in the dismantling of white supremacy. She’s still here and I’m with her.” —Jen Hatmaker, New York Times bestselling author of Of Mess and Moxie and For the Love"The movement toward diversity and forgiveness, [Brown] points out, too often involves white people seeking credit for recognizing the crimes of the past even as they do nothing to fix things today, and black people being required to provide endless absolution and information while calmly enduring dignity-eroding and rage-inducing injustices."—Library Journal (Starred Review)"Brown passionately rejects facile reliance on “hope,” stating that “in order for me to stay in this work, hope must die” and “[t]he death of hope gives way to a sadness that heals, to anger that inspires, to a wisdom that empowers me.” An eloquent argument for meaningful reconciliation focused on racial injustice rather than white feelings."—Booklist

I am a white woman and I needed this book. Let me first start by saying everything the negative reviews say is true. This book makes white people uncomfortable because it makes us confront our own biases and ignorance. The difference between the negative reviews and the positive reviews is how you choose to read that information and what you choose to do with it. It was very unnerving that every time I felt a certain emotion bubble up, Austin Channing Brown told me a few sentences later that I was feeling it and why it's not helpful. A few times throughout the book, I had to swallow my pride, wipe my petulant scowl off my face, and keep reading so I could grow. I highlighted all over this book and have already encouraged friends to read it, so we can have study sessions. It's one of those books that you need to keep around, and keep going back to, talking about it with friends, and getting better in the process. If you read this book with an open mind, you can't help but learn something valuable.

As a white man, I have little access to the experiences of people who have been systematically barred from places of power and privilege in our culture. Thank God for authors like Austin, who - with grace, courage, clarity and wit - invite me to see the world through their eyes. I'M STILL HERE is a powerful look at our world from the perspective of a person excluded by many of the structures and systems that benefit a person like me. This book is challenging, prophetic and beautiful. It's a gift to our word that couldn't have come at a better time.

The impacts of white cultural norms on people of color are invisible to white people. That means in addition to overt racism and white supremacy, there’s also millions of well-meaning white Americans who unknowingly make life more difficult for people of color. This book helps change that. It offers white readers an understanding of what is so often invisible to us, and how our actions impact other people every day.Of course, this book is even more powerful as a work of solidarity for women if color. It names and gives voice to their experices. And, it does so with phenomenal writing.Don’t miss this book.

I read this book as a woman who grew up in Ohio, in a 49% white and 49% black town and even growing up in this bubble... I still recognize after reading this book that not only do 'we need to do more' to show basic human decency and compassion, but individually each of us needs to confront our biases. As Austin eloquently puts, white people don't get a pass for their racism just because they've confessed it to some black person they haven't yet wronged. As after reading this book I don't just want to give a review of her spot on commentary, and indeed I don't think I can ever give a review of someone's memoir because it's their life, but I want to give a review of America. And I have to say I would giev this book all 50 stars on the US flag. And I give America zero stars, until black children no longer need to be taught that they need to keep their hands out of their pockets, until a black adult can sit outside on a porch without fear of being shot, until each individual person can understand the phrase: Black Lives Matter

Austin Channing Brown joins the ranks of vein-opening memoirists, offering her story for anyone who will choose to listen. Well worth the read.

Clear, succinct, and poignant. This book isn’t really for white people, but every white person should read it. Austin Channing Brown just tells the truth with conviction and feeling. I have been reading books about race for a few years and this is the first I’ve seen in a white, upper-middle class, and specifically ministry context. She discusses racism in places that are supposed to be above it, white guilt in a way that I have never heard so clearly defined and contended with, and the fear and glory of her own black body. I wish everyone would read it.

Read this book again and again. Share it with everyone you know. Open your heart and your mind. Set aside your ego and really think about the book’s message. It is thought-provoking, inspiring, and painful. It challenges the reader to self reflect and to look at things through a different lense.I rarely find myself at a loss for words, but I am struggling to write more than I have already written. I need time to consider the book’s message. No doubt, I will be reading it again soon. For now, I’ll close my review with a heartfelt thank you to Ms. Channing Brown for writing this book.

A few chapters in to this book, I finally let my defenses down enough to let Austin's story come through. A quick but engaging read, "I'm Still Here" is a memoir that everyone should read. It's a book to revisit too. The way she fuses personal and family stories with current events and deeper reflection on our (post)modern American political situation creates just the right fusion for a great auto biographical account that does provoke questions and challenges but is simply beautiful in its own right

I'm a chronic procrastinator on a journey to become a more productive and efficient person. In the last couple of months I've read a number of books on procrastination and this is the best so far. This is a concise book that offers practical advice on how to break our nasty procrastination habits (habits is the key word here). What I found particularly useful about this book, is that it also explains the cognitive and behavioural biases that underlie procrastination. This is particularly important to me, since I just can't do something if I don't understand the rational behind it.Okay, I should stop procrastinating and get back to work now.

The first book on beating procrastination that I've read which explains the psychological basis for the behavior and gives practical steps for change. Pychyl's book is a quick read with helpful excercises. I experienced immediate improvement. Just finished reading it and thought this is an extraordinary book. I am particularly happy that this is a short book and the author resisted the temptation to transform it into a 300+ page monster. Descriptions of what procrastination is and why we do it are clearly written, and instructions to overcome it are also clear and simple to put into practice. I loved it.

This is a "just ok" 100 page book that you can read in one sitting (if you dont procrastinate), :-)The main take-off from the book is very simple not to say simplistic:Recognize when you procrastinate and just get started on the task you are avoiding.I really expected more to be honest, something more insightful, motivational. I hoped that after reading the book I would aquire some motivationor learn minimally sophisticated techniques to overcome the problem, but I felt like the book only told me basic straightforward stuff that is self-evident and obvious. I feel disappointed and will have to look elsewhere. The book lacks in this regard as well as it doenst have any notes or bibliography.

I've read several books on procrastinating and habit formation (The Now Habit, The Willpower Instinct, Better Than Before, Mini-Habits) but this one is the best. It's written in a clean and practical style. After reading this book, I even started listening to Pychyl's podcast and also found a very good lecture he did posted on YouTube. I think this book deserves a lot more attention. I'm happy I stumbled upon it and am super-satisfied with my purchase. :)

I always tried to read a book on this topic. But they are always too long, so it is really easy to procrastinate reading them. But this book is very different. Very concise, very to the point, and gets to the root of the problem as quickly as possible. You can learn a lot in a very short time from this book. Recommend it to anyone who has problem with procrastination.

This book was so good that I had barely gotten through the first two chapters when I stopped procrastinating on my exercise routine by understanding that I don't need to be "in the right mood" to get started, that getting started creates the right mood. Six weeks later, I'm still walking an hour each morning (and several pounds lighter). Reading a few more chapters nudged me to stop procrastinating on writing my blog posts and delaying updating financial records because I now remind myself that my future self will thank me. Tim Pychyl does a superb job of showing how to apply the latest research on procrastination and goal setting with great examples and cartoons. When the thought of procrastinating enters my mind, I now realize I am being tempted to "buy time" but with a credit card with a very high interest rate. . . No way I'm gonna fall for that! So I get back on track. In short, don't delay in reading this book. It's worth ten times its price. I'll be giving it as a gift to several people--and it will get there on time, under budget.

Practical fix-it-now techniques without in-depth research; act don't read. Also, this book is unique is showing the relation of procrastination and negative mood states.

This book is very compact so it doesn't become another distraction on the way to procrastination. I heard the author speak on KQED/NPR and I found he had a very sensible and considered approach to identifying and fixing the procrastination puzzle. He helps you determine whether you procrastinate, or there is a good reason for not jumping on every task right away. The exercises helped me clarify my own situation and to develop some concrete strategies for recognizing the flags of procrastination, as well providing solutions to redirect my focus and achieve my goals. You identify some areas of suspected procrastination, what your thoughts are about these neglected projects, the costs of not taking care of them, the benefits or acting in a timely manner, a mantra to help redirect your thoughts. He delves into human nature and our struggle with our natural tendencies, explores how to get started and stay started, and how to remove distractions and keep plugging at it, realizing we aren't perfect.
