Loved it! I have read and also loved The Traveler's Gift and was in the process of buying that book for Christmas gifts for a niece and nephew when I saw this book for the "Young" and from the description and their ages decided this would be a better fit. I can always get them the "adult" version later.I decided to get my own copy to read so I would know what they were getting. I was not disappointed. The storyline is more geared to teens but the principles interwoven inside the stories are timeless (that is the definition of a principle isn't it?) and the same as in the original Traveler's Gift.I recommend this as a gift for any teen you care about and want to encourage their current love of reading or maybe trigger a new interest. They will thank you later.

Great story that included an interesting narrative and a ton of useful life principles.....My 9 year old son loved the book and we use the decisions to discuss life principles.I highly recommend this book.

Wonderful book, it is now my go to graduation gift. (plus an amazon gift card + a deck of cards) Just saw Andy Andrews speak at the Thirty One conference a few weeks ago, what a guy!! Watch his video (about 10 min) on youtube the butterfly effect. Get this book for teens, and get The Travelers Gift for yourself.

Although the story is compelling, what earns this book a 5-star rating is the essential life lessons it teaches. The 7 truths learned by the protagonist were once considered common sense but have since been rejected by our culture, much to our detriment. The Young Traveler's Gift is required reading in my 8th grade English class. I believe those who live according to the principles Andrews lays out will be more successful in high school and in life.

Through contact with famous successful people in a dream a troubled young man is given a chance to become a better person and worthy contributor to society. An excellent read for anyone needing a helping hand up into a more satisfying productive life.

I was so impressed by the adult book I got the Young Traveler's Gift for my grandson turning 15 and entering high school. The cover and layout are value added when it comes to asking a busy teen to read. The chapters - encounters - are so well written and powerful. I will plan to give this to each of my grandkids as they enter high school. I wrapped it in a world map, put challenge words on the ribbon and attached a key chain compass/flashlight thing! Made a great birthday gift! I'm recommending it to all my piano families too as a family reading challenge!

My son loves this book, and has read it at least 2 times!

A bit smaller than expected although I’m excited to read it. Plan on handing it down to my nephew once he’s of age to read it. Love the Traverler’s Gift for adults! Great read if you have yet to!

Rating: 5/5 StarsReview:This review turned into a critical analysis of the book, but I promise it’s worth it. But, heed my SPOILER ALERT. You’ve been warned! In reading Lila Quintero Weaver’s first foray into children’s fiction, I couldn’t help but think that this would pair well as a close analysis, keeping in mind Gloria Anzaldúa’s border theory. To keep it simple, Anzaldúa believed that immigrants, especially Latinx, and more specifically those of Mexican descent, not just live with the trauma of immigrating across the literal border. The theory also refers to the borders that have been socially constructed, such as racial categorization and sexuality just to mention a few. I’ll apply her border theory to this text because I believe most of the book is a study of said theory. My Year in the Middle follows the last six weeks of Lu Olivera’s sixth grade in 1970 Red Grove, Alabama. Lu is the child of two Argentinian immigrants, which reflects the author’s own personal experience (this is explained at the end of the book with the Author’s Note). Lu considers herself to be a wallflower and does everything in her power to stay that way. But when the P.E. teacher decides that the girls will start running for the last six weeks of class, Lu becomes the surprise underdog. She outruns the entire class, which had been desegregated only the year before. In classrooms, however, an unspoken rule still divides Lu’s peers between black and white. Seeing as she identifies as neither, she occupies a seat in the middle row. In that way, she straddles a literal border.“A border is a dividing line, a narrow strip along a steep edge. A borderland is a vague and undetermined place created by the emotional residue of an unnatural boundary. It is in constant state of transition. The prohibited and forbidden are its inhabitants” (Anzaldúa 3).The way Lu sits in that racial border that has been constructed without her say in the matter, is much in the way she struggles with her identity as a Latina. She fears her Spanish is not too good and that her translation skills are too basic. However, above all else, she seeks acceptance among the white girls in her class. She fears being Othered, but also fears complete assimilation into whiteness. Anzaldúa said: “The only ‘legitimate’ inhabitants [of the borderlands] are those in power, the whites and those who align themselves with whites. Tension grips the inhabitants of the borderlands like a virus. Ambivalence and unrest reside there and death is no stranger” (4). Though death may not be something that’s talked about in the book, ambivalence is something the narrative strides to be against. Lu feels the tension between her black and white classmates, which at times escalates to physical violence. At some point, even Lu’s the victim of physical and verbal violence from an older white student who takes the bus with her. Lu thwarts this by stomping his feet and correcting that she’s Argentinian, but she has to constantly remind herself of something her mother says: “We’re foreigners. We’re not supposed to get involved.”Thus, Lu becomes an agent of whiteness by not daring to mix with the black kids, even though she identifies more with them and wishes to befriend them. There is a border that she dares not cross, even though it’s not something her parents have taught her. Her parents have taught her to be implicit in white supremacy even though they don’t believe in it. When Lu finally decides to befriend Belinda, a black girl in her class who is also a fantastic runner, she worries about what her white peers might think of such relationship. She doesn’t hide it in public, and she defends Belinda in the face of a racist shopkeeper, but when she’s faced with the questions of her white peers she shies away from the courage she shows. It’s a slow process as she realizes the systems at play in her classroom, and though she has some help from white peers like her friend Sam, her “best friend” Abigail does the opposite and encourages Lu to assimilate. In fact, most of the characters who wish that Lu assimilate are women. If it’s not Abigail telling Lu to read women’s fashion tips in magazines, it’s Lu’s mom telling her that sports aren’t for girls when Lu expresses her love of running. This is a sentiment that even Anzaldúa expresses: “Culture is made by those in power—men. Males make the rules and laws; women transmit them” (16). By communicating that assimilation into a white heterosexual capitalist patriarchy or assimilation by ignoring your Otherness and that of your peers, Abigail and Lu’s mom transmit the messages of those in power, which Lu then internalizes. The book mostly consists of Lu unlearning these internalized feelings and the text does so deftly and with the innocence of a sixth grader who’s only starting to realize the depth of US’s injustices. A good evolution is the image of Lu’s sister, Marina, who’s a college student as well as a volunteer for the Brewer campaign. This campaign is another subplot that’s almost always occurring in the background of Lu’s life. At moments she believes she wouldn’t be affected by the campaign, which is against rampant white supremacist ex-governor George Wallace and desegregationist Albert Brewer. But the book takes you on a sort-of ride-along as she goes to a Wallace rally because Abigail just wants to participate in a cake walk. As Lu feels horrible when the speeches start and the Confederate flags start flying, she bargains with herself and others that she only went to appease Abigail be a part of something with her white peers.Lu doesn’t tell her black friends or her own family that she attended the rally, knowing it would be met with scorn, which means that she knew it was wrong. When her social studies teacher asks her to write an essay about her experience at the rally for bonus points, she does so, and gets full points while feeling guilty. That guilt is useless, however, seeing as it resembles the white guilt of her peers who want to rebel against the white supremacy in place at their school, but won’t do anything productive with it. It’s when Lu uses her guilt to defend her black friends that it becomes more productive. At a white student’s birthday party, Lu becomes the target of harassment from her peers for being friends with the black students, especially Belinda. White fear comes bubbling up, and it’s only perforated when Lu finally owns up to her own prejudices and by calling out her peers’ racism in the process. When Brewer loses the race, the sentiments explored in the book felt all too familiar. As the Brewer supporters start mourning the loss, the white Wallace supporters become even more assertive of their desire for white supremacy. The feelings paralleled the days after the election of Tr*mp. Keep in mind, the book is set less than 50 years ago, and the sentiments of white supremacy and segregationist laws are still present in the US. It is at that point that Lu’s reality comes crashing down on her.At school, she finally decides to sit with the black students, eschewing the created border of the middle row, the false neutrality she thought she could keep. Lu finally overcomes “the tradition of silence” that Anzaldúa wished to do in regards of the censuring of her identity as a Chicana (59). And though, again, Lu isn’t a Chicana, it’s the best turning point for her as she accepts her Otherness and doesn’t give into white supremacy. In fact, she goes to a white man in power (the principal) to defend one of her black peers, who’s attacked by a white student in class.Lu is constantly subverting the expectations set for her as the book moves along. She shows growth in the most hopeful and honest way. She’s constantly deconstructing the set default, though not always by herself, like in the scene in which Belinda is at her house and they’re going through the magazines that used to be Abigail’s. Belinda points out that there’s one black model for the overwhelmingly white publication, but she doesn’t worry because at her house they receive beauty magazines for black women. Lu can’t help but wonder that there’s no such thing for girls like her, girls from Latin America, and that she doubted she would ever find a black-haired model with brown skin. This scene is a short one, yet it puts into focus what has been set as the standard for beauty: Eurocentric features. It also helps as a way for Lu to deconstruct such standards, and to question why those are the default.“It is not enough to stand on the opposite river bank, shouting questions, challenging patriarchal, white conventions. [...] At some point, on our way to a new consciousness, we will have to leave the opposite bank, the split between the two mortal combatants somehow healed so that we are on both shores at once [...] Or perhaps we will decide to disengage from the dominant culture, write it off altogether as a lost cause, and cross the border into a wholly new and separate territory. Or we might go a different route. The possibilities are numerous once we decide to act and not react” (Anzaldúa 78-79).And indeed, Lu acts. Most of the book is her reacting to injustice, and by the end she’s acting and choosing her own path. She chooses herself, she chooses her real friends, and her family. She also chooses running, with her entire family supporting her and her dad and sister helping her train before the big competition (a Field Day). It becomes a celebration of Lu’s identity as her parents shout encouragement in Spanish as she goes. Those screams allow her to win, seeing as her competition, an older white girl, gets distracted and falls on a pothole. This final scene settles the border paradox within Lu. She’s able to celebrate both her passion for running and her identity as a Latina, all while celebrating the friends she has. There’s no indication she wants to seek reunification with the white peers who turned their backs on her, or that she wants to seek some sort of revenge. At the end, Lu is happy with forging her own path. She’s finally unafraid to embrace her actions, and leave behind the created borders. There are new borders, but she doesn’t wish to acknowledge them at the moment the book is finished. She’s proud of her growth, and so was I.Works Cited:Anzaldúa, Gloria. Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza. Aunt Lute Books, 1987.Quintero Weaver, Lila. My Year in the Middle. Writing: 5 Plot: 4.5 Characters: 5Excellent middle grade level story about racial tensions in Red Hook, Alabama, on the eve of the gubernatorial election of 1970 (hint: George Wallace wins). Lu Olivera is a fabulous character — she is the quiet and unassuming daughter of Argentinian immigrants who finds her own voice and moral compass as racial tensions manifest in her town and her school.Lu is one of the few kids who “sits in the middle” in the classroom, with the black kids on one side and the white kids on the other. She finds a talent and passion for running and a new best friend — who happens to be black — to go along with it. As events transpire, and things occur which she knows is wrong, she wants to speak up, but running through her head is always her parent’s refrain: “We’re foreigners. We’re not supposed to get involved.” It’s both a history lesson and a lesson on the perils of conformity, being delivered to just the right age audience. The characters are real and absorbing, and the plot keeps you on your toes and is appropriate for the middle school audience. The characters are portrayed skillfully as kids who would rather focus on family and friends (and in Lu’s case - boys) than politics but who are reluctantly drawn into these issues nonetheless.Great book!

Compelling and well written book about a Argentinian immigrant girl in 1970 Alabama during the first year of racial integration in fictional Red Grove AL. She's caught in the middle of racial strife, and between her culture and American culture and between the Pro-George Wallace faction and the Anti-Wallace faction at school and in the community. At first I was surprised at how many idioms and casual catch phrases she used until I realized that they all dated from 1970 and only seemed over used because I grew up with them. A fascinating and beautiful book about an ugly topic. Don't miss Lu -- she's a great friend to have in tough times

"My Year in the Middle" might be set in the 70s but it covers many relevant topics in today' world. Some are racial relations, immigration, and standing up for what you believe in.The characters are flawed, as all people are, but lovable. Lu learns and grows throughout the course of the book and matures in her relationships with the people around her. This is a well written and engaging book.I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book is an excellent exploration into a period of history not often written about from a Latinx perspective. Young readers will identify with the timeless struggles of the main character. The story is fast-paced and relatable. Highly recommended for young readers who think they won’t like historical fiction- because it will change their minds!

Based on the author’s own experience, this is an immersive portrait of Alabama in 1970 from the unique POV of an Argentinian immigrant girl. Schools have just integrated, there’s a very tense election, gender and racial biases run rampant, and Lu finds her voice. I also loved how Lu trained regularly and seriously for her goal of winning a track competition of field day. Plus, there’s plenty of details about music and pop culture—Lu’s voice sounds so authentic (and engaging!) and you can tell the author lives this. The issues it brings up are still relevant today.

Lu Olivera a sixth grader in 1970. She finds herself in the middle row in her classroom, the row in between blacks and whites. When in gym class her teacher has all the girls run 400 meters every day Lu finds that she has a knack for running. When her friends start changing for the worse by following a new governor candidate who wants segregation she has a difficult choice to make: Follow their lead, or choose friends who will stick up for what’s right with her? Great, awesome book. It' helped me pass my nursing entrance exam (TEAS). The way this book is broken down is so much easier to review Anatomy & physiology without missing any information about the subject.

This was used as a study tool for the HESI A2 exam. It was very thorough and covered all the material needed as succinctly as possible, which is just what I needed. I had made an A in Anatomy and Physiology I (6 months ago) but had yet to take Anatomy and Physiology II. I used this and a few test prep books and made 100 on the A & P section.

I used this book when I was studying for the HESI A2 exam. This book was a great alternative to re-reading the A&P textbook used at my university. I used this book in addition to my notes from A&P class. The great thing about this book is that each chapter covers a different system, allowing readers to jump to whatever system they need to review. Review questions are listed at the end of each chapter. The end of the book also has review questions. I plan to use this book if I need a quick review of A&P during nursing school. The book clarified some of the concepts I was struggling with. I wish I had purchased this book when I was taking A&P at my school.

I bought this book to help prepare me for my ATI Teas test. It did just that. I would recommend this book to those who are studying for their test. It goes over each system that will be tested.

I actually enjoyed this book as I coupled it with HESI A2 Secrets Study Guide. This books get into more detail while the other study guide just scratches the surface. Granted, the other book is meant to touch upon the main subject but this one is far more intricate. So anytime I wanted a deeper explanation, I'd refer to this book. The only thing I didn't like is that it's all in black and white. It had pictures but it would have been helpful if at least those pages were colored. Regardless, it's worth it.

I used this book to review for both the HESI A2 and TEAS VI. It had been over a year since I finished A&P I and II, so I knew that I needed a refresher. This book, while containing some inaccuracies, was a very good resource to use for review. I would highlight information that I had forgotten, and then I would hand write about 1-2 pages of notes for each chapter. I scored 100% in both the A&P section of the HESI and the science section of the TEAS.

Used this to pass my HESI-A2 last month. I read it like a novel, from cover to cover. I've never taken an A&P course in my life, not even in high school, and I still scored an 88 on the A&P section just because of this book here.

This book is a good review I used it to study for the Hesi a 2 and I made a 98 on the a&p section! I highly recommend this book!

It's a book that hits home It also let you know that no matter what we do for a career in life we're all human And with that come's joy and suffering and never at the right time. But we do learn to get through it .The book is a true life story .faith and trust in God makes it possible to get through all things .Sometimes we forget that until we hit bottom . That's when we seem to find God and he provides the road homeIt was an excellent bookThe hardest story to tell sometimes is our own .Because they are so personal .Well done Denise Jackson

I was a little disappointed in this book. It was not nearly as good as her first book. "It's all About Him".Actually some of the same stories were in this book as well. It was very short, only 127 pages. Alot of good scriptures and some encouraging words for anyone needing a spiritual lift and trying to find God's way in their life. I think she should try and write something else now. i love Alan Jackson so that is one reason I wanted to read it.

Very nice little inspirational book to have around and read regularly.

I loved her first book and looked forward to this. Was disappointed. It's just a rerun of the first. I wanted to hear her battle with cancer and watch how God helped her through it like He did me.

Very well written and a book to enjoy and be blessed by.

Denise is an awesome woman. She stands by her faith and holds firm to what God instructs in her life, as well as her family. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to be the spouse of a super star. People act like they are some kind of gods and would do almost anything to get their attention. These women & men whose spouse is that star are to be commended for hanging in there. SO many marriages in the entertainment industry do not make it, then along comes a couple like Alan & Denise Jackson. They went through some terrible times, but they were made for each other, and they survived. I have ALWAYS wanted to meet some of the wives of stars and just sit and talk about how THEY live life.

This is a good book. However, I had already read It's All About Him and this one is a smaller version of that book. But, having said that, this book would make a wonderful inspirational gift and I highly recommend it.

This is a very personal and moving book about a crisis of faith and finding her way back to God. It's a bit repetitive with all the headings being repeated verbatim in the body of the text, but otherwise very well written.
