good reference book

Excellent condition book. This book has some tips and methods that are new to me, a novice/intermediate carver. This will be a very nice reference.

If your desire is to start out in bird carving or if you desire to expand your knowledge, this book should do it for you. It comprehensive and covers everything from tools, techniques, painting, and anatomy to model building and sketching your subjects. The book's emphasis, however, is on power carving techniques. If you carve by hand, the book should still be a useful reference for everything but techniques used to carve the three studies you are guided through. The step by step pictures are very detailed and the descriptions well written.For those on a limited budget, I offer a few more tidbits -In the tools section, the artist recommends a foredom power grinder, a micro carver, and a fairly expensive woodburner. Altogether, the recommended products would cost you well over $800.00. Please keep in mind that the artist is a professional and will use professional tools to achieve her results. There are more inexpensive tools available.I personally use a craftsman rotary tool with a flexible shaft, a dremel stylus (has a nice handle for detail work)- [...] and a colwood woodburning kit that is advertised here - [...]There are variable temperature hobbyist woodburners that are between 25-50 dollars. The Colwood kit comes with a woodburning pen and a few replaceable nibs, as well as a book on pyrography to get you started. Wecheer makes a power carver that is about half the price of the foredom. Proxxom also makes rotary carving tools at a more reasonable price. There are purists who will argue that one should use the best tools out there. I don't disagree, but I think you should use the best tools out there that you can afford.Whatever power carver you go with, do not get too cheap with the rotary bits. The carvers are only a motor that causes the bit to spin. The actual bit is what touches the wood. The burrs can be purchased at many online locations. Go with what works for you.Also, keep in mind that the artist is truly a professional. Do not get discouraged if your carving is not as nice as hers. If you can make something even a quarter of the quality of this woman's work, you should be extremely proud.

Purchased this book for a friend who usually carves ducks. He absolutely loves it. The book has many tips for carving smaller birds. Nice gift for anyone who enjoys carving.

This book is almost overwhelming in it's detail, I never expected a carver to reveal so many of her techniques and secrets in a book. Most carving instruction books seem to hold back some of the techniques, but this author spells it all out in a massive book that should guide you completely through all four projects to a successful completion. It is wonderfully illustrated and I recommend it highly.

The book covers power carving song birds from choices of wood to mounting the finished sculpture.VERY well done with detailed explanations & the authors thoughts about each step. Anatomy, acurate color rendition with actual information as to how it was accomplished, how to mount eyes & create feet are all covered with photograhs backing up the text.I'm a hand carver yet found the book not only instructive from my point of view but interesting & beautiful as well.It now rests on my coffee table where it has been enjoyed by several guests who have found it's content facinating. ... Because it IS!WELL done!

This book is a must for all serious songbird carvers. I have always carved ducks or birds of prey so I needed a reference to help me get into songbirds. Her illustrations as well as her narrative make it easier to make the transition from large to small. The painting references are right on also. I hope that she will feature other birds such as a Yellow Warbler and Red-Winged Blackbird in her next presentation.

When I saw the title of this book, I was skeptical. There are so many (too many) books in the market about self-improvement that don't deliver anything new. "Its title says it's not another fitness book, but I find that hard to believe," I muttered under my breath. "Show me!"Guess what? It's not just another fitness book. In the entire first half of the book the author reveals much of himself--his losses, his addictions, his heartbreak, and his lack of self confidence. Over many years he slowly began to heal himself through a hard-fought commitment to fitness and spiritual enlightenment. Like the author, I've had crushing losses that left me depressed and without hope. I never really believed that fitness could be the way out. My spiritual growth in a Christian contemplative life has helped me to find peace but I never though it possible to improve my physical conditioning at my age (baby boomer).The second half of book, the "manual" section, consists of uncomplicated guidelines that are backed by years of experience and study. I'm impressed with the author's knowledge, I'm grateful for his commitment to helping others, and I'm encouraged that at age 71 I'm not too old to make significant improvements in my body and my state of mind.So the skeptic was proven wrong--it truly is not another fitness book.

First an admission of guilt: I start books, enjoy them, yet leave them before I reach the last page. I can come up with many reasons why this happens, but none of them really makes any sense so I leave it at that. Not this book that I read and (and reread some pages). The title did catch my eyes - which I thought “hmmm, I really want to read about fitness but in a not another fitness book!” So, I read it all and somehow I reached the last page, miraculously, What is appealing about it is the heartfelt and genuine stories of the author that take the reader through the pages in consistent rhythm of authenticity and deep personal conviction. The book goes through a personal journey that leads the reader through real-life stories to pass a clear message: Move. Respect your body. Respect your mind. Treasure the gift you have. I thoroughly enjoyed Steven’s journey and somehow made me appreciate and improve mine as well. Finally, I loved the collection of quotations sprinkled throughout the book. This book should be renamed to “Manifesto for a Better You!”

Titled “Not Another Fitness Book,” Steven Head’s narrative takes the reader way beyond the personal training clues he provides from his depth and variety of experience. The fitness you can gain from reading this book goes beyond “physical” fitness, offering helpful input to achieve greater philosophical, ethical, and social fitness too. You get there by following Steven’s personal journey, one with all the sharp turns, sad moments, and obstacles to overcome that would make any life story interesting. Throughout, you see how physical activity and conscious exercise is woven into Steven’s life story, and is substantially responsible for his health and happiness. They could and probably should be woven into your own, even if you are lucky enough not to encounter similar trials. And he tells you how, meeting you right where you are in the shape you are in. There’s no finger-wagging here, there’s wisdom and realism. And it leaves you with the sense that, “Yes, I could do this. Indeed, yes, I will do this.” And you're very glad he did.Head’s prose is direct and easy, and readers like me can be pulled along to the end in one enriching session of two to three hours. Take the trip.

Steven Head knocks it out of the park with this book. He shares his personal struggles and demons, and reveals how fitness, and mind/body wellness, changed his life. It is a manual to help those of us who have tried and quit gyms/trainers time and time again. I have the good fortune of training with Steven, and can say without a doubt that he has changed my life--in the way I feel, the way I look (got a long way to go on that one), and my general attitude about fitness. I highly recommend treating yourself to a fresh look at life, and fitness. Read this book!

After many years of not lifting weights, I read this book and was inspired to go back to the gym. I have been lifting regularly for several months now. It is great to feel the strength returning while also watching my weight go down.In reading this book, you can clearly see that Steven has a lot of problems and challenges in his life. One constant in his life has been fitness. Fitness has helped him through some difficult times and helped him deal with depression and loss. It is very motivational to see what a difference fitness has made in his life. It motivated me to give it try myself.I gave this book to everyone in my office for Christmas this year and to many family members. I am getting a lot of very positive feedback from many of them.I highly recommend this book!

Succinctly in 3-4 chapters, the disaster was described, and examples were given from around the world and in the United States. Whether longest drought or deadliest tornado, the books gave good information paired with dramatic photos. Each book had an end section containing an index and glossary, and a "try this" section which will help any teacher do a mini science lab in the class. I found the science behind the books to be accurate and I loved the way the author tied in real disasters. The books are also aligned with Common Core (reading informational texts) and NGSS (Physical Sciences/Earth and Space). Journey Without Maps is a non-fiction work filled with reflections, character sketches, and sometimes dreamlike images. It's not easy to compare it with any other book, for me; it's essentially a travel diary, an account of a rather irrational trek across Liberia that Green undertook in 1935, accompanied only by his cousin and the team of hired bearers who carried their hammocks, water filtration gear, etc. The book is fairly short and episodic, though it occasionally drifts into memories of England; even a couple of the author's dreams are included, nor do they seem out of place; the recounting is largely chronological, but it's always in limited detail--these are sketches--and much of what Greene recalls here is strange, perplexing, suggestive--these are, after all, a man's memories of far-away places, in a time before the Second World War. While the journey is occasionally dangerous, this is not a thriller: the danger comes mainly from local politics. For the most part, the journey is simply exhausting--especially near its end. The trek doesn't end up "proving" anything; it simply happened.The treat here of course is Graham Greene's prose. It's a constant frustration to me (and surely others!) that his novels aren't offered yet on Kindle (except as audibles), so the chance to re-read, at very least, Journey Without Maps on my Kindle was a very welcome surprise--but, at the same time, it does remind us we can't yet enjoy The Comedians, Brighton Rock, etc., on Kindle. Still, this is English writing of the very finest sort, so straightforward and unembroidered, and yet of (somehow) such near-magical lucidity--if you've read Greene before, you will know what I mean; if you haven't, well, at least there is now this little bonbon available. I expect to read it many more times.

It may seem odd to contemporary readers that a travel book written 70 years ago, would still resonate with readers today. However, a perceptive travel book usually is as much about the author as it is about the customs and peoples and places he visits or she, or in this case they.In the case of Greene, this type of book is a veritable treasure trove of information about the creative process and the influences that went into some of his later fiction. In this book in particular I hear Scobie's rain in the "Heart of the Matter", or Query's meandering river in "A Burnt Out Case." Even the format of the book which begins as all good travel books should, with the very beginning of the trip, in this case England, hints at the sea voyage of Brown, Smith, and Jones in "The Comedians" as they reach their destination in Haiti.Yet this is not simply a collection of influences and descriptive details that will be used by some well meaning graduate student on his journey through academia, but also an insightful story about travel at the time. I cannot fathom why anyone would wish to put not only himself, but his female cousin, through such a forbidding journey but it does illustrate what unique characters Greene and family truly were.If you are familiar with Greene's work and have not read this book does so and read the signposts of his future work. If you just want to experience what travel was like in central Africa almost a century ago this book will put you in another's steps.It is curious as has been mentioned that so few of Greene's books are available for e readers which I find disconcerting. Also I did check my old copy of the Penguin edition and I am at a loss to explain why the introduction was not in the electronic version with may present an obstacle to some readers. I fear that Penguin is among those publishing houses which are combating the e-reader trend,

In 1935, in the first flush of success of his first acclaimed novel, Greene took off to explore the concept of Africa, building on his notions of adventure from childhood reading. Identifying never-colonized Liberia as the most authentically uncivilized of African destinations, he set off, with his 23-year-old female cousin, a troop of native bearers and virtually no knowledge or experience of trekking. His four weeks of walking a twelve-inch path through the Liberian wilds, stopping at villages overnight, makes an interesting and engaging account, never sentimentalized, and with much thoughtful insight. He gives plentiful narrative detail, but always is overwhelmingly concerned with the psychic reverberations of Africa, and his perceptions of primitivism, in his own life and outlook. He is not unaware of the irony of his deliberate quest for un-self-consciousness flowing from external reflections on the "natural" human world. This book is an interesting counterpoint to observations of modern-day Liberia, for which progress over the ensuing seven decades remains elusive. A few more of the roads have been paved, but most of the country remains bare soil, now soaked in more blood and mayhem than the quaint natives and masked, raffia-skirted tribal "devils" of 1935 could have dreamed of.
