Review

“An incendiary cocktail of literary ambition, fame, sexual adventure and addiction.”—Newsweek“Perfectly outstanding...Milford’s biography takes the whole of Millay’s heaving, grieving, ecstatic life into account in a way that is almost loving, always respectful, even when blunt truth and candor are necessary....Masterful.”—Kaye Gibbons, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution“Original and spellbinding.”—Lorrie Moore, The New York Review of Books“Savage Beauty is irresistible.”—Amanda Foreman“One seldom sees this level of brilliant, hands-on research in contemporary literary biography. The result is this compelling, keenly perceptive life of Edna St. Vincent Millay—with its own ‘savage beauty.’”—Toni Morrison “Riveting and revealing...Savage Beauty sweeps before it all previous biographies of Millay, which by contrast seem uninformed and too discreet.”—J. D. McClatchy, The New York Times Book Review

From the Inside Flap

once said that America had two great attractions: the skyscraper and the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay. The most famous poet of the Jazz Age, Millay captivated the nation: She smoked in public, took many lovers (men and women, single and married), flouted convention sensationally, and became the embodiment of the New Woman.Thirty years after her landmark biography of Zelda Fitzgerald, Nancy Milford returns with an iconic portrait of this passionate, fearless woman who obsessed America even as she tormented herself. Chosen by USA Today as one of the top ten books of the year, Savage Beauty is a triumph in the art of biography. Millay was an American original—one of those rare characters, like Sylvia Plath and Ernest Hemingway, whose lives were even more dramatic than their art.

But it's dull, dry and boring. I guess those words mean the same thing, but they can't be overused when talking about this book.I have Milford's biography of Zelda Fitzgerald, and it's my favorite of the Zelda biographies I have read. It's evocative and lyrical. I've reread it several times through the years. What happened? I have no idea if Millay had an interesting life or was even an interesting person. I knew little about her before this book and I feel I know even less now, because I just can't plow through this tedious biography.

It was a very interesting account of Ms. Millay's life. I was familiar with her poetry, but not with her story. I wish the author had gone on a bit further to detail how her friends and the public were made aware of her death and what sort of funeral arrangements were had for her. Since the author was speaking to her sister about Edna St. Vincent, she would have had access to the information. I suppose it would not have made for the "dramatic" close to the book though if she had included it. The editing could have been better, there were many errors in it.Ms. Millay seems to have lived at both extremes - extreme poverty and wealth. A talented trend setter, she supported herself, her mother and sisters ( to an extent) and her husband who had been wealthy when she married him. It seems people were always awestruck when they met her, which aided in her somewhat wild lifestyle. She seems to have gotten most everything she wanted to achieve but in the end, came to ruin due to various addictions.

Nancy Milford, author of Zelda, biography of the wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald, impressed me with her research, insights, and ability to invoke the life, both public and private, of the new, liberated woman, "flapper" extraordinaire. Having read Zelda many years ago but still remembering Milford's fine treatment of so difficult a subject, I decided she might measure up to the task of fairly representing the intriguing poet who also burned the candle at both ends. No surprise! Another wonderful, full-of-facts-and-insights biography. What a complicated genius Milay was! I especially learned the sources of her inspirations and became reacquainted with her work. I have yet to finish this book: I find I enjoy reading it the way I read poetry-- a little at a time, like a rich dessert.

First up: Like all Kindle products, the download is perfect and accesses and reads easily. You can use the search function if you want to find specific passages, such as where it alludes to Vincent's meeting with Georgia O'Keeffe, for instance. I recommend Kindle. As for this book: It's delightful. Vincent was a complex genius and a pure hellion and a wildcat who just plain burned herself out, twenty years too soon. Using her own letters and journals and diaries and the letters and first-hand reports of others, it paints a vivid and complete image of her and shows her sometimes bizarre journey thru life. You get the feeling that if you met this sweet-looking 5' 1" tigress, you'd either instantly fall in love with her or be scared to death of her. Or both. Her genius flows from her, altho you are also introduced to some of her troubles and failures. At her peak, her grit and determination were phenomenal. If I come into a time machine, a place and time I'll visit is some of her readings and presentations, as they must have been amazing. The author takes us to these, vividly, both out front and behind the scene. The book is also richly peppered with her works, and you see in many cases where inside of her they came from. Some of her works are profound and tragic, and some are funnier than the best of Ogden Nash. You definitely come away feeling as if you've gotten to know her.If you're the least bit curious about her, this is the bio for you!

This book was overly long, yet so much was left out. There are too many excerpts of letters or journals, some of which were interesting but much was irrelevant or repetitive. Milford didn’t keep the story moving. It got quite bogged down in the beginning especially and went on and on without saying much. The Millay women were fascinating, creative free spirits and the three sisters were devoted to their mother and each other in their younger years. This was definitely worth exploring. But where did they come apart? Milford never answers many questions. What ultimately happened to their father and so many others of significance in Edna’s life? I had to go on Wikipedia to find out more. Also, Milford describes many photos of Edna. Why not include some in the book? This biography is obviously well researched but not well-organized and I found it frustrating to read, although it got more interesting as it went on. I’m sure there are better ones on Millay. I almost feel like I have to read another to fill in the missing pieces.

This biography of Edna St. Vincent Millay is as fascinating and provocative as the life Millay lived. Thoroughly researched, with numerous citations from Millay's own letters and from the writings of the many men (and women) who loved her, this book gives a detailed look at one of the 20th century's most important literary figures, and the times in which she lived. The book is quite long but was riveting to the end.

A good idea but it has a lot of text but not enough photos of yoga poses. This is for beginners with some trauma in their lives so it should make it much easier for the traumatized user to see how to start a pose, and go through steps in order, to get into each yoga pose without having to go out and purchase another yoga book that would be too advanced and taxing for a trauma victim to handle. We like the principle, but it lacks in execution and integration of yoga into the means of reclaiming your mind and body.Overcoming Trauma through Yoga: Reclaiming Your Body

As someone who first learned yoga over 30 years ago but didn't keep an ongoing practice, I remember the slow peacefulness of those early classes. No one was trying to prove anything, all the props and gear and "costumes" that exist today were not a part of a yoga practice and no one rigidly insisted on doing the poses exactly right. People were allowed to make mistakes and learn as they went along. In recent years, I have been dismayed by the speed at which yoga classes proceed and how athleticism seems to be the emphasis. By the end of an exhausting class, you really need savasana! Because of this, I rarely attend a class and try to find DVDs where the instruction is at the pace I can go. So I can well imagine that many yoga classes may be intimidating for a trauma survivor, both because of my own experience in the classes and because I work with trauma survivors. This book is a welcome introduction to the need to be gentle, easy and slow with many trauma survivors as even the least amount of stress may turn someone away. The need for mindfulness with the body, gentle acceptance and learning to be self compassionate can do what years of talk therapy can never do. It can bring the person back home into their body and mind, a body/mind she or he can trust and feel grateful for rather than one that is always in crisis or pain.If you happen to work in the therapy field, another good book is Yoga Skills for Therapists by Amy Weintraub.

As a yoga teacher of more than forty years and a yoga teacher trainer (as well as a psychologist who has worked extensively with trauma for about as long) I liked this book very much. I have a caution about any work that thinks of yoga primarily as a therapeutic modality. Yoga is for spiritual self-realization, period. The first sentence of the commentary of Vyasa on Patanjali's sutras is that "Yoga is samadhi," pure and simple. It is no problem that people often initially come to yoga these days through an interest in therapy but let the depth of self-relationship that comes with the practice not end there. This is a clear exposition of Emerson's method of using yoga with people who have experienced trauma. As a personal matter, it validates many conclusions that I have reached over several decades. In truth, I think it describes how all hatha-yoga classes should be conducted, not just the therapeutic ones. The current American emphasis on exercise and conditioning through "yoga" completely loses the point of the depth and subtlety of the mind-body relationship which yoga explores like no other discipline.I would prefer that the title also reflect the way that yoga helps one to reclaim relationship to the deeper layers of embodiment as well. For example, personally, I have found the alternate nostril breathing practice to be the most effective of all of the yoga practices that I have used with therapy clients. It uses the same neurological methodology as EMDR therapy without a specific focus on the memory of trauma which often triggers other traumatic episodes to such a degree that the client becomes overwhelmed and unable to make use of the experience.I also differ a bit with Emerson about the use of touch with clients. Touch is the sensory modality that is the principal driver of human development at almost all levels. There is a strong argument that to deprive clients of this opportunity to re-organize their experience deletes one of the most powerful and positive tools that we have to offer at the level of embodied practice. Of course in utilizing touch one must know one's client very well and must think about the parameters of touch with great care and scrupulous and respectful communication. But this is always our obligation in therapy and simply banning the use of touch across the board seems a step too far. Therapy always involves great risk; the attempts to make it safe usually also degrade its effectiveness. But with these personal reservation, it is a very useful contribution and well worth reading.

This book is great! I actually am overcoming trauma and it helped me understand my response to PTSD and how my body functions. Then it gives some asanas and ways to approach the asanas with people in trauma. I am really glad that I read this! I have had yoga instructors who "claim' that they are trained in trauma sensitive yoga but after reading this I know that they aren't. I had some instructors try to force me into staying into an asana that was triggering me and making me cry. I had one instructor pretend to slap me to illustrate something. I've had another who touched me all the time when I said I was uncomfortable without asking me. I guess I just thought that was how it goes until I read this and since I read this, I now tell them something if they say they have been trained in trauma sensitive yoga and are doing things that don't seem consistent with that practice. I think all yoga instructors should read this as well as any one who is overcoming trauma who wants to do yoga----so that you understand how your body works and might respond to yoga.

I teach yoga in institutional settings. Trauma abounds. This book looks at trauma from the point of view of the practitioner, teacher, and health professional. Engaging read. I got through it in a couple of sittings. Gave me insight that I hadn't had before. Take-home message is that you can't offer too much personal choice to students.

Loved going back to Spring water to see what became of some of the characters. Good story line but predictable.

This is the story of Jack/Wesley and Olivia, a lonely spinster who isolated herself from the community until one day her first boarder arrives, you will have to read the rest of the story.Like all of this authors stories this one kept me spellbound, despite the fact that this is the second time I've read it.

I enjoyed the characters and the plot.I especially enjoyed the holiday traditions and the relationships between the characters. It was ahappy holiday story.

I would recommend reading this book, after reading the series. Like the entwining relationships of the characters in the series how things use to be with people, not like now days. Also was very well write, interesting threw out the book.

OMG!!! I absolutely loved this series. Took my time reading the last book as I didn't want it to end and got to love all the people in Springwater.

Story line is a bit predictable but still provided some twists. Good stories to escape with.

I have read most of Linda Lael Miller's books and this is among the best. I had a hard time putting it down. Thank you Ms Miller.

I enjoyed Springwater Christmas, in fact I loved reading all of the Springwater series. I felt I knew the area as well as some of the characters by the time I got to this book,
