A good idea but it has a lot of text but not enough photos of yoga poses. This is for beginners with some trauma in their lives so it should make it much easier for the traumatized user to see how to start a pose, and go through steps in order, to get into each yoga pose without having to go out and purchase another yoga book that would be too advanced and taxing for a trauma victim to handle. We like the principle, but it lacks in execution and integration of yoga into the means of reclaiming your mind and body.Overcoming Trauma through Yoga: Reclaiming Your Body

As someone who first learned yoga over 30 years ago but didn't keep an ongoing practice, I remember the slow peacefulness of those early classes. No one was trying to prove anything, all the props and gear and "costumes" that exist today were not a part of a yoga practice and no one rigidly insisted on doing the poses exactly right. People were allowed to make mistakes and learn as they went along. In recent years, I have been dismayed by the speed at which yoga classes proceed and how athleticism seems to be the emphasis. By the end of an exhausting class, you really need savasana! Because of this, I rarely attend a class and try to find DVDs where the instruction is at the pace I can go. So I can well imagine that many yoga classes may be intimidating for a trauma survivor, both because of my own experience in the classes and because I work with trauma survivors. This book is a welcome introduction to the need to be gentle, easy and slow with many trauma survivors as even the least amount of stress may turn someone away. The need for mindfulness with the body, gentle acceptance and learning to be self compassionate can do what years of talk therapy can never do. It can bring the person back home into their body and mind, a body/mind she or he can trust and feel grateful for rather than one that is always in crisis or pain.If you happen to work in the therapy field, another good book is Yoga Skills for Therapists by Amy Weintraub.

As a yoga teacher of more than forty years and a yoga teacher trainer (as well as a psychologist who has worked extensively with trauma for about as long) I liked this book very much. I have a caution about any work that thinks of yoga primarily as a therapeutic modality. Yoga is for spiritual self-realization, period. The first sentence of the commentary of Vyasa on Patanjali's sutras is that "Yoga is samadhi," pure and simple. It is no problem that people often initially come to yoga these days through an interest in therapy but let the depth of self-relationship that comes with the practice not end there. This is a clear exposition of Emerson's method of using yoga with people who have experienced trauma. As a personal matter, it validates many conclusions that I have reached over several decades. In truth, I think it describes how all hatha-yoga classes should be conducted, not just the therapeutic ones. The current American emphasis on exercise and conditioning through "yoga" completely loses the point of the depth and subtlety of the mind-body relationship which yoga explores like no other discipline.I would prefer that the title also reflect the way that yoga helps one to reclaim relationship to the deeper layers of embodiment as well. For example, personally, I have found the alternate nostril breathing practice to be the most effective of all of the yoga practices that I have used with therapy clients. It uses the same neurological methodology as EMDR therapy without a specific focus on the memory of trauma which often triggers other traumatic episodes to such a degree that the client becomes overwhelmed and unable to make use of the experience.I also differ a bit with Emerson about the use of touch with clients. Touch is the sensory modality that is the principal driver of human development at almost all levels. There is a strong argument that to deprive clients of this opportunity to re-organize their experience deletes one of the most powerful and positive tools that we have to offer at the level of embodied practice. Of course in utilizing touch one must know one's client very well and must think about the parameters of touch with great care and scrupulous and respectful communication. But this is always our obligation in therapy and simply banning the use of touch across the board seems a step too far. Therapy always involves great risk; the attempts to make it safe usually also degrade its effectiveness. But with these personal reservation, it is a very useful contribution and well worth reading.

This book is great! I actually am overcoming trauma and it helped me understand my response to PTSD and how my body functions. Then it gives some asanas and ways to approach the asanas with people in trauma. I am really glad that I read this! I have had yoga instructors who "claim' that they are trained in trauma sensitive yoga but after reading this I know that they aren't. I had some instructors try to force me into staying into an asana that was triggering me and making me cry. I had one instructor pretend to slap me to illustrate something. I've had another who touched me all the time when I said I was uncomfortable without asking me. I guess I just thought that was how it goes until I read this and since I read this, I now tell them something if they say they have been trained in trauma sensitive yoga and are doing things that don't seem consistent with that practice. I think all yoga instructors should read this as well as any one who is overcoming trauma who wants to do yoga----so that you understand how your body works and might respond to yoga.

I teach yoga in institutional settings. Trauma abounds. This book looks at trauma from the point of view of the practitioner, teacher, and health professional. Engaging read. I got through it in a couple of sittings. Gave me insight that I hadn't had before. Take-home message is that you can't offer too much personal choice to students.
