From the Inside Flap

SATAN. THE DEVIL. BEELZEBUB. Our sworn enemy goes by many names. Scripture calls him our "adversary" who prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. He "doth seek to work us woe""¬‚¬"and our testimonies and lives hang in the balance. Yet Christians are often ignorant of his plans, power, and even presence, and are easily caught off guard. Are we taking Satan seriously? Do we know how to stand firm against the prince of this world? Here, respected pastor-scholars shine the light of Scripture on our ancient foe, identifying who he is, explaining how he operates, exposing his deceit, and celebrating his final demise. They will equip you to more fully understand the war we are engaged in and how you can "resist the devil" in the power of Christ. R. Kent Hughes "¬‚¬" Satan in the Garden Thomas J. Nettles "¬‚¬" Knowing Satan Ronald L. Kohl "¬‚¬" Malevolent Methodology Derek W. H. Thomas "¬‚¬" The World, the Flesh, and the Devil Roger Nicole "¬‚¬" Conflict with Evil R. Kent Hughes "¬‚¬" Deliverance from the Evil One Joel R. Beeke "¬‚¬" Persevering in Satan's Sieve Thomas J. Nettles "¬‚¬" The Final Demise Sinclair Ferguson "¬‚¬" All Things New Each year, the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology presents speakers and subjects to strengthen the church's faith. This carefully edited selection concentrates on our knowledge of and resistance against Satan.

Review

"Oakley is a scholar's scholar and his book is a gem. This profoundly learned and engaging work takes aim at the controversial American theorist Leo Strauss. He examines the dialectical interplay, over two millennia, between antipodal views of natural law: in the intellectualist view, natural law is immanent in the structure of reality and therefore immutable, while in the voluntaristic or covenantal view, it is imposed on the universe from without and therefore changeable." —CHOICE, July 2006"This small, but soon to be a classic book is of equal challenge to students of natural law and human rights. In this text and endnotes Oakley critically engages, among others, Strauss, Haakonssen, Tuck, and Shapiro."- Walter J. Kendall III, The Law and Politics Book Review, September 2006"This excellent book provides a sophisticated but accessible introduction to some fundamental problems in the history of natural law thinking, and the writing throughout is elegant, lucid and persuasive." -Brian Tierney, Catholic Historical Review, 2007 (The Catholic Historical Review)Choice Outstanding Academic Title."This book consist of the revised text of the 2001 Curti Lectures in Intellectual History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison...Oakley's overall case for the intimate interconnections between moral and scientific thought is cogent and illuminating. By the same token, he amply demonstrates the possibilities and power of a certain kind of intellectual history. May we see many more books like this one." —Jean Porter, The Journal of Religion, Oct. 2007, Vol. 87, No. 4 (Jean Porter)"...while Oakley-the-historian feels he should leave Speculation behind in favour of Scholarship, Oakley-the-philosopher is repeatedly drawn back to Speculation and a discussion of why these ideas appeared in the Middle Ages, and it is when he allows himself this guilty pleasure that Oakley's short book is at its most compelling." —Paul Teel, Philosophy in Review "The argument itself is open to at least three criticisms. First, while Oakley argues that the developments concerning the physical laws of nature led the way for developments in the other two realms, he ends his book with a chapter that traces the origins of natural rights back to the twelfth century, two centuries earlier than the important events in his account of the evolution of the physical laws of nature. Oakley could explain this, I believe, but he does not; it is an obvious question left unanswered. Second, Oakley's Speculative argument is nearly identical to one Michael Foster made in the mid-1930's in the journal Mind, but Oakley—who is aware of Foster's work and has written of it elsewhere—only mentions Foster briefly in the epilogue and an endnote, with no description of Foster's argument. In a book on the history of ideas, this is a surprising omission. Third, although Oakley announces at the book's beginning that he intends to move from Speculation to Scholarship, he in fact fails to make that move decisively..."-Paul Teel, Philosophy in Review (Negative)" This short book is meaty, but offers a relevant critique of the rise of the modern views of ethics. It suggests that modernity is not anti-medieval, but an extension of a certain form of medievalism, Nominalism. While there is no direct correlate between his thesis and ministry, Oakley offers an important theory about how we are to understand the context in which we do our ministries." — Mark C. Mattes, Grand View College, Currents in Theology and Mission (Mark C. Mattes, Grand View College Currents In Theology and Mission)“Oakley is a scholar’s scholar and his book is a gem. My three-year-old son loves Thomas the Train and I love to buy books for my kids so I was very excited to find a Thomas Easter book for him! I'm really happy that my twins aren't as rough on their books anymore so I have been adding several of the Little Golden Books to their collection. The book measures 6 1/2 inches by 8 inches and, like all Little Golden Books, it has the typical gold binding so it fits perfectly in with our collection of LGB. This book has the hard front and back covers with paperback pages and lots of fun, colorful pictures for kids to look at.Thomas and the Easter Eggs is a cute story about how Thomas has to go help out in the town of Harwick for a couple days. While he is there, he gets to see what the town does for their Easter celebration and he ends up helping out with an Easter egg hunt. Thomas also learns about springtime. This book is an excellent book to give to a Thomas fan for Easter. I gave it to my son before Easter so we could read it and talk about Easter beforehand. So far my son loves it and asks me to read it to him a lot! Even his twin sister enjoys it. From a mom's point of view, I love the themes of helping others and being kind to others that are present in this Thomas book, as well as the others we have read. I recommend this book to any Thomas fan!

My two year old wants to read this at least five times a day. I love any book that encourages a love of learning in children. This is a cute little story about a mishap and some eggs didn't quite make it to the park for a hunt, but Thomas did some problem solving, called an audible, and took the kids to the eggs rather than the eggs to the children. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because I would probably save that for a book that I think should be a classic. This is a really solid Thomas Easter book. No complaints

Great story, not too long or wordy like some of the other Golden Thomas books. We still read it all year, not just at easter!

Cute book about a tractor that spills its cart of easter eggs onto a field and thomas saves the day. Perfect for easter basket!

Nice story that both my son and I enjoy (and we have very different tastes in books).

My 3 year old wants to read this every night and it’s not even Easter anymore

A very sweet story about Thomas the Train helping children with their Easter egg hunt. Very pleased and both my 2 year old and 5 year old sons love the story.

Thomas is a great kids book.
