Review

"The story is compelling, drawing readers into the world of extraterrestrials, gods, and ancient events in a way that seems a combination of reading that daily paper and indulging in popular fiction. Reading The Lost Book of Enki is a truly unique, intellectual, and pleasurable experience to recommend to customers looking for something a little different." (R. John Allcorn, New Age Retailer, March/April 2002)"This book is another brilliant example of Sitchin's scholarship. I found it exciting reading, and give it my highest recommendation. The Lost Book of Enki . . . has an impact that will generate discussions all over the globe." (Don Ecker, UFO Magazine, April-May 2002)"...this is really one interesting book....a very intriguing topic." (Morgaine, Circle of Stones, July, 2004)"An epic tale of gods and men . . . challenging every assumption we hold about our past and future." (Branches of Light, Issue 30)

From the Back Cover

FICTION / MYTHOLOGY Will the past become our future? Is humankind destined to repeat the events that occurred on another planet, far away from Earth? Zecharia Sitchin’s bestselling series, The Earth Chronicles, provided humanity’s side of the story--as recorded on ancient clay tablets and other Sumerian artifacts--concerning our origins at the hands of the Anunnaki, “those who from heaven to earth came.” In The Lost Book of Enki, we can view this saga from a different perspective through this richly conceived autobiographical account of Lord Enki, an Anunnaki god, who tells the story of these extraterrestrials’ arrival on Earth from the 12th planet, Nibiru. The object of their colonization: gold to replenish the dying atmosphere of their home planet. Finding this precious metal results in the Anunnaki creation of homo sapiens--the human race--to mine this important resource. In his previous works, Sitchin compiled the complete story of the Anunnaki’s impact on human civilization in peacetime and in war from the fragments scattered throughout Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, Hittite, Egyptian, Canaanite, and Hebrew sources--the “myths” of all ancient peoples in the old world as well as the new. Missing from these accounts, however, was the perspective of the Anunnaki themselves. What was life like on their own planet? What motives propelled them to settle on Earth--and what drove them from their new home? Convinced of the existence of a now lost book that formed the basis of ancient Sumerian texts holding the answers to these questions, the author began his search for evidence. Through exhaustive research of primary sources, he has here re-created tales as the memoirs of Enki, the leader of these first “astronauts.” What takes shape is the story of a world of mounting tensions, deep rivalries, and sophisticated scientific knowledge that is only today being confirmed. An epic tale of gods and men unfolds, challenging every assumption we hold about our creation, our past, and our future. An eminent Orientalist and Biblical scholar, ZECHARIA SITCHIN (1920-2010) was distinguished by his ability to translate ancient Sumerian and other ancient texts. He was a graduate of the University of London and worked as a journalist and editor in Israel for many years before making his home in New York City.

I was teary upon finishing this book. Seems to me Sitchin distilled all his careful translations of the Sumarian cuneiform tablets into this heart-felt epic tale. This is his idea of what Enki might have dictated. The introduction to the book is well worth the price of the book in itself! This rendering of the tale of the Anunnaki stay on earth goes far beyond the simplistic branding of bad (Enlil) versus good (Enki). Maybe Sitchin gives these "gods" too much "humanity" given the ruthlessness of Anunnaki behavior here. On the other hand, the complexity of the questions and problems they faced merits more than a shallow, single sided view. And certainly the story must go beyond dry scholarly translations. This is the epic story of humankind's origins. Even if not yet entirely complete, it more satisfactorily answers so many unanswered questions as to who we are, why we worship "gods" and why we have royalty today than any other story I've come across. For those who criticize Sitchin's work as being inaccurately translated from the tablets, let them publish their story of what they think the tablets say. Sitchin has put his work thoroughly on display. His is a coherent rendition. It serves to enlighten us to our origins. What do the critics have to offer? Buy the book. Read this epic tale and let it move you to deeply ponder what it means to you as a human being.

Sitchin hit it out of the ballpark with this book. I really like the way it's organized. Each chapter begins with a summary. Then Sitchin gives his translation of the ancient Anunnaki story about the development of humans from upright walking creatures from the South Africa region of the gold mines. The need was to develop slave workers to replace the Anunnaki's grinding toil in the gold mines. After "shars" of hard labor and rebellion looming in the mines, the promise to the Anunnaki Command was to provide workers to relieve them. As the book promises, many of our questions about the creation of humans are answered. There is a helpful glossary in the back to help keep names etc. straight. In a related interview, Sitchin said that he translated over 800 texts, proving an accumulated, in depth knowledge-base of work was used to complete his offering on the historic epic on the creation of mankind. WOW, finally after having so many questions on the topic of Genesis' two "creation of man and woman" stories, I finally have some answers that Bible scholars refuse to ethically address. It puts the Garden of Eden and Adam and Eve's expulsion under the microscope. Religion has always BLAMED Eve for being sinful and causing the separation from "God," but here you will find there is a whole lot more of the story to learn about. There might be nay-sayers about this book's presentation, but those skeptics will never come close to the depth and breadth of Sitchin's knowledge. For anyone who is really serious about understanding how and why and by whom humans were created, I absolutely suggest this book become a part of your biblical resource library.

I've searched my entire life for answers to the age-old questions: Is there a God? Why does God allow suffering? How do you explain the technology used to build the Great Pyramid in Egypt? Was there ever life on Mars? Is there truth to the evidence of intelligent life existing or having existed on the Moon? If there is a God, how could he/she create genetically defective creatures? Better yet, why? How did the Asteroid Belt form? Was there a Noah's Flood and if so, was it Divine Intervention as the Bible claims? This is the first book that actually makes sense! Finally, after a half century of seeking the Truth. Here it is. For all you 'seekers' out there, before you read anything else, get this book. You won't be disappointed.

One of the best books I've ever read!HIGHLY reccomended if you want the truth of our civilization and planetary history, as well as confirmation of where modern religion came from, and doubtless evidence that modern religion is all a crock of $#!+ and hogwash that was simmered for the last 3 centuries, and finally put on boil. Don't believe me?Read the 12th planet by the very same former CIA author and follow it up with this book. If you still haven't read enough, check out the end times book as well as the rest of sitchin's work.These/this book(s) are/is guaranteed to change how you see your world!

I LOVE THIS BOOK!! I have read all the others, but this one...Enki goes into great detail about how humanity was made. Blows the Bible out of the water!! You get a first had account from Enki, and that's brilliant. The language is a little challenging at times, but...with re-reads and great logic you can understand it. I had been searching for how Humans were created and the Bible never answers that. It also makes sense now as to why the Biblical "Single" "God" has some kind of personality disorder. Christianity and Catholic ways have too many problems and inconsistencies for me, and so many other people I know. This book, and the Earth Chronicles make SENSE. Reincarnation is not discussed, but it doesn't really have to be. That's more of an Inner Awareness and Buddha explains it very well. So, if you're seeking a LOT of answers that many Bibles all over the world don't seem to answer...read this!

This book was very well written and easy to understand. Once reading the first few pages, the rhythm of Sitchen's writing style just flows effortlessly through the readers mind. I connected with this book in a closed loop fashion where the story played in my mind like a movie while I read each page. Sitchen's unique ability to translate the Sumerian tablets opens up a pre-biblical account of man's creation according to the God who orchestrated it. This was indeed a great experience and it offers another interesting view of where we come from and where the biblical stories originate from.

Review

“Beautifully written, John’s book is an intimate and revealing memoir of a long and diverse music career and the ups and downs of life on the road. We’ve each had a complicated and thrilling journey since our high school friendship sent us off into the world.” —Steve Martin, banjo picker, actor, and writer  “John’s terrific, funny, moving book makes you feel like you are right there with him on some of the most famous stages in the world, in the top recording studios, and on the never-ending road. It makes you feel that an amazing successful career in music and show business is totally within reach—as long as you can play the banjo, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, and guitar brilliantly.” —David Mirkin, producer, The Simpsons  “Nitty Gritty is one of the greatest bands and gifts music will ever hold. John McEuen doesn’t know how not to be honest . . . as a player or an author. You’re going to love this read!!” —Garth Brooks  “John McEuen was a breathtaking prodigy when he made his bones in the Southern California music scene of the early seventies. This book chronicles the realization of that early promise and the challenges of a professional musician’s life on the road.” —Linda Ronstadt  “The road tales are extremely entertaining, but John’s depictions of off-the-road time spent with family are extremely entertaining too. Compelling, candid, hilarious, and heartwarming, The Life I’ve Picked by John McEuen shows he’s not just a great musician—he’s also a hell of a writer.” —Randy Poe, author of Skydog: The Duane Allman Story  “John McEuen has been a hero of mine since I first saw him flying around the stage with a fiddle at a Nitty Gritty Dirt Band show in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. A key member of that legendary band, solo artist of renown, radio host, producing great projects—all the while touring the world as an entertainer and influencer. . . . The Life I've Picked is a fun and poignant read. I thought I knew about John, but there is oh so much more to learn in this thrilling ride.” —Joe Bonsall, The Oak Ridge Boys  An “enjoyable, conversational memoir.”—Booklist Online"I wouldn't want to have to count how many interesting stories small, medium and extra large that appear in John's long life in music, but they sure make for one fine book." —Elmore Magazine "The Life I've Picked is a wonderfully entertaining and impressively informative read from cover to cover." — Midwest Book Review

Ordered my copy early, and just got it a couple days ago. First thing I did was look at all the photos, then dove in. Can’t say enough good things about the book. It really took me back. I decided I wanted to play mandolin when I heard it on Mr. Bojangles, when it first came out. I was probably about 7 years old. I’d later cut my musical teeth on the first Will the Circle Be Unbroken recordings. For me, John was always the stand-out, and I’ve followed his and the band’s career pretty closely. He’s quite the story teller, and I was amazed at the number of cross musical genre friends and connections he has had over the years. Friendships and connections with some of the Greats, as I see it. Hey John! I think you qualify as one of them too! I was impressed with the book’s honesty, but fairness. Especially regarding issues with, and poor treatment from now former band mates. I couldn’t help but feel for John, who worked his butt off to achieve his dreams. The book was also witty and funny. I was lauging out loud more than a few times, often thinking, “Man, you couldn’t make this up!” I’ve really enjoyed the book immensely. Highly recommended. My only disappointment is that it didn’t come in hardback. Thanks for sharing your life John! You are an inspiration to the rest of us front porch pickers out here, and dammit, you’ve had a Wonderful Life! Hope to see you out on the road soon!

I LOVED THIS BOOK! It was a great look back at my growing up years, musically. Honest, funny, sometimes sad. John takes us through a Forrest Gump kind of journey with the many musicians and celebrities he has met along the way. John defines himself as a "banjo nerd". He was always trying to be accepted by the cool kids. Well John, from one music geek to another, you made it! YOU are the cool kid now. Thanks for re awaking my love for Bluegrass. Love ya", Theresa Berweiler

Full disclosure: John's an old friend and played on two of my albums. That said, this is one of the best music autobiographies I've ever read. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that when you KNOW the author, you're less inclined to gush--but the beauty of this book cannot be denied.Unlike some music autobiographies, there is no debilitating addiction problem here--other than music itself. Sure, there are moments of titillation and surprise; juicy tidbits, moments of high hilarity and I'll admit I was moved to tears more than a few times. If you're familiar with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band--you'll love this look behind the scenes. But if you don't know their work, you'll still love the ride (and, dare I say, feel motivated to get at least of couple of their early albums such as Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy, Stars and Stripes Forever, Symphonium Dream--everyone has their favorite, mine is Uncle Charlie, I consider it The White Album of Country Rock). This book should be read by anyone contemplating a career in music--or the arts in general. McEuen's talents are many, but they also include razor-sharp business acumen, ambition and a dogged sense of entrepreneurship--something his bandmates failed to adequately appreciate. There is acrimony and there are issues that must be addressed across 50 years of nonstop music-making. This is McEuen's opportunity to have his say and he does it fairly yet pulls few punches. He paid a personal price for pursuing his dream (divorce, sacrificing time with his kids)--but still managed to raise a fine, super-talented family and retain his sanity and sense of humor. That's rare in this business. He name-drops out of necessity (it ain't braggin' if it's true) and yet his humility is never far away. American life is a constant series of reinventions. Few people have been able to pull that off like John McEuen: late in life he branched out into TV/Film scoring and quickly garnered an Emmy-nomination. He also won a Grammy for producing Steve Martin's banjo album The Crow as recently as 2009.I can't wait to see what this banjophile dynamo does next.

As a longtime NGDB and John McEuen fan I was eager to read this book. But his life has crossed paths with such interesting people, including many, many very well-known artists in the music industry, and he has had such crazy, fun, unlikely experiences along the way, that I think just about anyone, fan or not, would have a hard time putting it down. Aside from being a great musical talent with a storied career, John is a wonderful story-teller, and his story was one worth telling. I love this book.

For any fan of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this is a cautious read! You are led into a world that I simply didn’t know existed within my favorite band. However, knowing that every band goes through the artistic self changes that afflict musicians, artist, chefs...and nearly all creative talents, it shouldn’t have been surprising that these issues affected NGDB.Regardless of the disappointment that “partners, brothers & friends” is much closer to fantasy than reality, this book is typical John McEuen story telling, which he masters brilliantly at both NGDB shows of the past and now his own road show. The stories always left me wanting more! The Disneyland adventures with Steve Martin to the months filming “Paint your wagon”, you just know there are more stories untold. All in all, I always felt the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band created the background music of my life’s story, they’ve been there since day one with me, and I saw John just last month performing his new show. A tremendous talent on stage, a tremendous story teller by way of his book. While sad for fans, it’s just a passing of time! Like knowing you may never hear Jimmy Ibbotson sing “Ripplin Waters” again...things move on! And in John’s case, things move forward.

Must read for NGDB and/or McEuen fans like me since 1967 Golden Bear era. It answers all the questions in a well written bitter/sweet history of John's rise and the band's sink in the dismal swamp.
