I saw this man on the CBS Sunday Morning show, which normally only run wholesome, feel good stories.. He said he had serviced the stars for years and years.. They did not, however, explain he meant he serviced them sexually.. I naively thought he had written a book about the stars little quirks, things like demanding a certain coffee that could only be purchased two hours away.. silly me...I got it on audible because I had a free credit available.. I stupidly didn't read the description or the reviews, thinking it'd be an interesting story to listen to while I worked.. To be honest, though, this Scotty guy did seem a little weird to me on the Sunday morning show.. He works as a bartender now (at the age of 89), and he kind of seemed a little smarmy to me... But hey... it was on the CBS Morning show.. Don't they only cover wholesome stories? CBS...you screwed up on this one!This man either has a very vivid imagination or he's lived his life in denial, trying to normalize what he's experienced.. If what he says is true, he was molested by men as a child, first by a "nice" neighbor,then by priests and on to men on his paper route...He went on to have one gay encounter after another, but insists over and over again that he, himself, is not gay.. I could care less if he's gay or not, but why does he insist he isn't when he claims to have had one homosexual relationship after another?According to Scotty, this very nice neighbor, the father of Scotty's best friend, took a very special interest in him when he was around 9 or 10, leading to the man "fondling" him in the barn, which was all very lovely and pleasurable...Then a young priest was in need of a sexual outlet, so this kid, at about the age of 11, took care of him..The priest was then good enough to spread the word among the other young priest that this "kid" was willing to "service" them sexually.. It was during the depression, so the money they gave him helped support his family...He makes this all sound sweet and normal, like a grown man fondling a 10 year old or a priest performing sex acts with a kid is just a normal part of life.. Lovely even.. Wonderful memories for him...Seriously, he supposedly has great memories of these events..The story jumps back and forth between adult hood and his childhood, all peppered with sexual events.. Most of his memories are of sex acts with other men, yet he says he's not gay, he prefers woman.. Yet, most of what he writes about is with men...He did live with a woman and had a child with her, but admits he was rarely home.. He describes her as a wonderful woman who never asked questions and just accepted their relationship the way it was... If he really had such a relationship, I'd say she was either a fool or she had her own agenda going on...He claims he worked in a gas station after leaving the Marines and in no time, he was being picked up by Hollywood stars and big wigs (all men), wanting a little "fun".. He soon had a little business going on at the gas station where people came to hang out and get lucky... Before long, he had a trailer (stored behind the gas station) to use as a brothel... A lot of his "Marine" buddies started making a little extra cash on the side by servicing these big wigs, too... Bet the marines love being associated with this man!I admit, I only listened to about 1/3 of the book before I decided it wasn't going to get any better so I stopped listening, so maybe it got better???? I doubt it...Like I said, this man is either living in denial about being molested as a child and being gay, or he just has a very vivid imagination.. At any rate, my first feeling that he seems a little smarmy was pretty accurate.. He just seems really creepy to me...He refers to all these powerful, influential men in his story as being great friends with him, who asked his opinion about business and life in general.. He seems to have an enormous ego..By the way, most of the men he mentions, I have never heard of...I'm glad I got this book with a free credit, because if I'd paid for it, I'd feel really ripped off..
Life & sex are both incredibly complicated & very simple. I absolutely appreciate Scotty Bowers attitude towards both. Hollywood, as a town and an industry, is both as well. The movies sell make believe, fantasy, pseudo reality as well as sexuality. Scotty Bowers kind of did the same. Sex is a very natural thing. It’s society that puts labels and changing morals on sex and people. But if you strip those away you have consenting people enjoying themselves. Scotty provided a service or connecting people. But he wasn’t a pimp. He didn’t make money off of connecting two people for sex. If they chose to make it a financial thing then that was their agreement. But Bowers did it because he didn’t carry the stigma and bullshit of the negative labels society places on sex and sexuality. And in a town/ industry such as Hollywood there are many people who needed assistance for whatever reason when it came to connecting with others for sex. The sad reality of bigotry towards gay people is that their natural sexual desires were/ are labeled as deviant, sick, perverted, etc. When in reality it’s just sex which is a very natural human instinct.Hollywood sells entertainment and such but those who made that entertainment, be they in front of the camera or behind it, were held to ridiculous standards of how they were supposed to act when out in public. Studios arranged sham marriages because they were afraid bigots wouldn’t understand a male actor who makes romantic heterosexual comedies was actually a gay man. And since they (the studios) see that gay actor as a commodity they’d force him to marry a woman so the studios could continue to sell the actor as a heterosexual icon. This was terrible on many levels. So how does that man find the sexual happiness that he desires? Well that’s where Scotty Bowers came in. He helped people find happiness in a very judgmental and bigoted world.As a Los Angeles native and a fan/ researcher of Hollywood history... I was very pleased with this book. While I was aware of some of the stories... This book added to my knowledge of that very complicated yet simple village/ industry known as Hollywood.Kudos to you, Scotty.
I knew of this book for awhile but figured it would be just another trashy "tell-all" but when I learned they made a documentary film from it I thought I'd give it a try. What a mistake. Forget the debate over how much truth there is in the book, it is not worth reading even as fiction. The multitude of one star reviews tell it all. I got fed up just over half way through and quit. I couldn't take any more of the BS that this self styled "Mother Theresa of pimps and whores" was throwing out. Yes Scotty all the hustlers and prostitutes were so happy as were the celebrities who used their, and your, services. Give me a break, I'm almost embarrassed to admit I paid money for this thing, but wanted to add yet another one star to the chorus of negative reviews.
For those with a fondness for the heyday of Hollywood and its movies in the 1940’s and 50’s, this book is a revelation yet that’s only the start. The other deeper insights concern the sexual predilections of many of its stars. Names and their orientations are not revealed here: each would be a spoiler. However, what was even more fascinating was the dominance of gay sex at a time when the institutional regimes – certainly in the USA and UK – were far from sympathetic. That is of course an under-statement. It was illegal in both countries. The other conclusion for this reviewer at least is that one could argue that ‘it’s sex that makes the world go round, not money’. At times, the book made me laugh; I simply enjoyed it!
