I won't waste space and your time by sharing all my praise for this book. Suffice to say that I concur with the reviewers before me. Except that it is not just for young people. I am a retiree who finally has time to pursue personal interests. I am expressing my creativity in landscape art, which demands that I understand the underpinnings of the mountains in my scenes. Like a sculptor studies anatomy, my best source to understand realistic landscapes is through geology -- a field for which I have no formal training. This book is a dream come true.I only wish that the layout designer had avoided two-page spreads for some of the diagrams. The artwork is great but having a key diagram broken in half by the "the perfect binding" page folds is frustrating and disappointing. In that vein, I suggest that this be made into a KINDLE book. It would be tedious on a handheld device but it would prefect for a screen the size of an iPad or larger.

Interesting approach to Geology that should appeal to the hobbyist. Equal parts instruction and directions as to how to participate in Geology.

This is a good little introductory text, with reasonable diagrams and easy-to-read short chapters. But it is absolutely not a field guide. It does not help one when out in the field. It does not help to identify rocks, fossils, minerals, etc. Its purpose is clearly to educate and to excite the student when indoors; not to provide a reference when outdoors. With a different title it would appeal to a more appropriate audience.

My husband is a reader but has been engrossed in this book every night. He works with soil for a living. I know nothing about the topic but still find the book interesting myself.

This is a beautiful little book. The design, the photography, the overall quality are all outstanding. In its essence it is more of a handbook, but contains all the necessary information to serve as an introduction into studying and designing perfumes. I found the historical context of the evolution of perfumes eye opening (even wished for a little more). I missed a little more information on the famous perfume houses (Guerlain, Coty, Chanel, etc.), but again, this is a small book and could not expect it to be comprehensive. The eight chapters of the book are divided evenly in between theory (art) and practice. The practice part contains recipes for sprays, oils, solids, recipes for fragrance blends, bath and body products (body scrubs, shower gels, lotions, creams), home fragrances (room sprays and reed diffusers). The author is clearly an expert on this topic and makes this introduction entertaining and easy to follow without trying to give an overly simplistic view. Again, I am amazed by the overall quality of this little book.

There aren't a lot of comprehensive books out there on how to make natural perfumes and fragrances. This one isn't either but it comes the closest. I believe the moral of the story is that if you really want to learn this stuff you need to take up some serious studying. However, the book goes into the science, both chemical and artistic, of how to combine scents and how to teach your nose (brain) to discern each one. It provides formulas for various blends and explains the history behind perfumes and perfume families, which I found very interesting. A pretty book as well, it is nicely done.

I thought this was going to be a real introduction to making perfume. It's more like a superficial coffee table book. Good information but not enough of it and too much went into making the book "pretty". Disappointing.

Liked the simplicity of the short featured articles which might entice the reader to explore further into the fascinating world of fragrance. Illustrations were complimentary and tasteful.

It is very informative. The author is very knowledgeable on the subject.

The below is a review of the MP3 audiobook version of this workThis book is an examination of matchmaking in markets where conventional price making does not apply. For example in the market for kidneys, on-line dating services, selection processes used in placing high school students in NY and Boston and universities in general and similar such markets. The book is interesting in many ways. One is the description that Dr. Roth provides on these markets that are so ignored in economics departments. He provides a decent discussion and analysis as to how they work. In addition he provides a discussion as to what variables affect them (i.e., depth of market, speed required for decision making, etc.) and how. Based on this readers can see what constitutes good and badly functioning markets in these areas. An excellent discussion of these, all the more important, as stated previously, that their existence is barely even mentioned in economics classes.In addition, there is also some discussion relating to institutions and how they are important to well-functioning markets in these areas. This part of the book, however, is relatively weak. It is too short and hence lacks the really in-depth discussion that is really needed. This is also ironic in that the institutional structure of these markets is very important to their functioning.Regarding the audiobook, its reader sounds very much like Dr. Roth. This includes his inflexions, tone, etc. It reminded me of him as I had him as a student. The reader probably attended a lecture or two of his.In conclusion, a very good book for those interested in the functioning of non-price markets.

Who gets what and why gives the reader an idea about how careful structuring of a market place can lead to great improvements in efficiency. The field that the author received the nobel prize in has been growing in importance over the last few decades and there is no doubt that design of market places is something policy makers from the macroeconomic down to the microeconomic sphere should care about. In this book, Alvin Roth goes through examples throughout his career where improving market design has led to better systems for people to live in. It is clear and interesting.The book is split into 4 parts, the first is titled Markets are everywhere. The author starts by describing markets and goes through commodity ideas and how standardizing of products leads to markets that are thick. He discusses how commodity exchanges were set up in the US in Chicago for example and how wheat trades enormous volumes in a standardized fashion. He discusses the coffee market as well which is a nice little insight. The author then moves on to discussing the market for kidneys; an exchange he helped to create. Here is where the reader starts to really get a feel for the work the author has done. The complexity in coordinating kidney transfers is real and the construction of chains of donors who could trade kidneys amongst them in a mutually dependent way turned out to be able to save many lives. The author discusses how the kidney exchanges evolved and how improving the mechanisms for exchange was in everyone's interest.The second section is titled Thwarted Desires in which he describes some market failures. The author starts by discussing how in situations in which there is a first mover advantage, market places can fail as participants try to beat each other in order even though by taking such an action they reduce the amount of information needed to make a decision. Such coordination failures lead to suboptimal selections by both parties. The author discusses some of the subject matter of Flash Boys and by that I mean high frequency finance. He describes why the spending of billions on infrastructure for speed of trading which has no real economic benefits are where markets can also fail. Speed of markets should not in and of itself be the desire for market design. The author finally touches upon making markets safe to transact in such that the rules of the market place are adhered to so that people can trust the mechanism of trade.The author moves into the real market designs that are being used by medical and school systems in part 3. He first discusses how the placement of medical schools was flawed and people were being placed far too early but such an outcome was the inevitable consequence of the issues of part 2 where first mover advantage ruined coordination. The author discusses surgeons as well as urologists and how the culture of the medical field can impact the required solutions to the failures of a market place. The author then discusses the school systems in NY and Boston where he had a direct impact on improving. He discusses the preference list that were being asked of students each year and how the back and forth between students being selected and the city system led to congestion that was inefficient for everyone. The author also discussed Boston which had different problems. But in this section the reader gets a sense of how clever design of markets can lead to better outcomes for everyone.The author then gets into some ethical issues like repugnant markets and brings up horsemeat in California as banned due to its repugnancy by the population in California. The boundaries of what should be eligible for trade are contextual to time and place and things like organs for sale and surrogacy can lead to questions about what broad set of values does the population have and given that what should be allowed to be traded and under what conditions. Once we know what goods and services we want to be transactable having the best market designs to facilitate will lead to better outcomes for those involved. The author convinces the leader through the book that market design can be instrumental in efficiency gains.Who gets what and why is very readable and interesting. Rarely do people talk about market design so its a nice change of pace for a popular economics book. I think anyone who reads this will have a better idea about some of what economists look at as well as how market design can make a world of difference to the outcomes of the marketplace and free market can mean many different things as markets are not all alike.

When I studied economics, I thought it was incredible irrelevant in many ways. It just didn't match what I experienced and observed in the real world. Thankfully, since then, the field of behavioral economics has grown dramatically to help explain the reality of markets. That's why I found Dr. Roth's book very fascinating.For some of the markets explored in the book, I felt I almost needed a scorecard to keep track of the "who gets what and why." Far from being a flaw in the writing, it truly illustrated just how complex some markets are... and how increasingly complex some of them are becoming. Pity the poor folks for whom these market situations are an everyday reality. (I especially had sympathy for the parents who had to make school choices for their children. Looked more akin to gambling!)I think this book has some great insight for the some of the new "sharing" markets where money may not be a deciding factor.It may not be quick read due to the extreme amount of explanation that was sometimes necessary to describe the various markets. But definitely a treat for those who like to dig into behavioral economic issues.

Listen here beetches. Read the ducking book. Our heroine, Z, is well written. I loved her character and I loved all the characters. It is a short read though. It's merely an introduction to the world, the characters, and hopefully the overall plot? But for now, it's pretty cut and dry and some of the plots you think were going to continue on, don't. Or at least, I think so. To say I'm intrigued is the mere hair on the camels back. I want more, I need more, and quite frankly will stab a beetch to get it. (AKA, I'm mostly going to beetch in RHRA FB group!)

This story just sucked me in, great chacter and world building. The story is so unique and the twists it takes as it progresses just keeps you wondering what will happen next. I love the fact that a lot of the characters have a disability of some sort, PTSD, Mental, Physical, etc but it enhances thier story. I very highly recommend this book and I will be 1 clicking all the other stories for this series!

This was an interesting harem book...and I have a feeling that her adventures are just beginning...looking forward to the next book hope a little longer...also minor spoilers....I hope Mali her friend finds a way back into Z’s life.

Paranormal. Rh. 7 supernaturals. Mate bonds. Human Assassin heroine. I don't even want to tell you anything about it. You just need to trust me and read it. Katie May has a way of yanking your heart around. Love it.

I found this an interesting read. I liked A well enough, but she also frustrated me quite a bit. I am interested in what will happen next, so I am planning on reading book two.

I've been eagerly anticipating this book and I definitely wasn't disappointed. Such great characters and lots of action, laughs and tears. Eagerly awaiting the next book!

Loved the storyline, and the characters. Katie knows how to write a story. However, using a dictionary to look up the bigger words would make this book a whole lot better.

About the Author

Ian Tattersall received his Ph.D. in Geology and Geophysics from Yale University and has been a curator at the American Museum of Natural History in New York since 1971 and chairman of the Department of Anthropology since 1990. His articles have appeared in Nature, Scientific American, Natural History, and other journals. His books include The Monkey in the Mirror and Becoming Human. He has hunted fossils and studied primates around the world, and in 1974, he discovered a new Lemur species in Madagascar, which was subsequently named Propithecus tattersalli. He lives in New York City.

I'm a 69yo college graduate. I certainly have had exposure to human evolution theory all my life. However, there are holes in my knowledge and this book wonderfully and entertainingly fills in these gaps. Tattersall not only informs but also knows how to teach. It is fun and exciting to read his book. I highly recommend it. I also thank the author.

Great great book for the layman like me

This is a great book for older children (and their parents). Well written; complete and detailed. Fascinating. Our 11 and 15 year old grandchildren loved the many pictures as well as the text.

The title describes the content accurately, it is well organized, very informative in lay mans language, is printed on glossy paper with great pictures and explores the movement of our ancestors out of Africa across the world. Not too long, a great read.

Ian Tattersall does a marvelous job of setting forth four million years of human evolution. He covers the disagreements among paleontologists and their colleagues, offers up competing theories and, on the whole, does a wonderful job of explaining what we think we know about human evolution. While not overly complex, the book does require fairly intense reading. The illustrations are extremely well selected and presented. I highly recommend this for anyone with an interest in exploring human evolution.Jerry
