I loved this book. The writer is so rigorously honest, I was in his corner from the get-go. He cracked me up writing on the details of his materialism like about his previous home located within a prestigious gated community of mansions and within this gated community, there was an even more refined inner link of bigger more impressive homes with bigger garages and perfect views of the golf course. You wanted to get into the inner link! I wasn't laughing at him, but at our common and absurd human desire to have more, more, more and surpass the Joneses.His life growing up in India was interesting and again I identified with the combination of wonder at the world, love from his mother and sisters, and abuse from his father. The way he decides to get into medicine was kind of cool.His near-death description of being out of his body in surgery and then on the other side was fascinating, including two reincarnation flashbacks and forgiveness from those he harmed in those lives. I've never seen that - closure with a past life - in other NDE's.I loved also his hanging with who he believed to be Jesus, which was a little strange for him since he was Hindu. His wife also cracked me up when he told her about seeing Jesus. She said something like, What about the 50,000 gods and goddesses? Must be a feature of the religion of their upbringing.I appreciated the difficulties Dr. Parti dealt with on changing his life when he came back. He and his wife didn't want the neighbors to think they'd lost status by putting their house up for sale and moving to a smaller one in the outer link of the gated community. Again, I was smiling inside reading that. It's easy for us to say, Who cares what people think?!?! But they'd lived that kind of life for years and years. I can imagine it was hard to let go in spite of the spiritual experience.I was surprised and delighted to see Dr. Parti was into Bill Wilson and the steps of A.A., too. I have no idea if he ever was in the program, but he clearly knows the details of Bill Wilson's life (he had an amazing spiritual experience that jump-started the program) and the principles of A.A.This is one of my favorite NDE memoirs. I read avidly from beginning to end and didn't skim a single paragraph, which I find myself doing too frequently lately. Right on, Dr. Parti! Keep spreading the word and teaching others how to heal themselves.
I found this book to be fascinating and couldn't put it down. I found Dr. Parti to be very forthcoming with all of his personal imperfections and how he had to work through them in his life. I found the concept of forgiveness of our parents and grandparents to be very eye opening as we don't always understand why our parents have treated us the way they did. His experience with his father was especially special to me as I didn't always understand my father's ways either. There is a lot of information in the book, but I think that if everyone would take to heart the changes that he was asked to make in his life following his near death experience the world would be a much better place to live in. I think the world needs to make a huge shift from being so materialistic and ego centered to being heart centered.
This is possibly one of the most important books of our time. We all live in the shadow of illusion; the illusion that the world of our five senses is all of our existence. Most are driven to drink from dry wells, striving for more possessions or achieving more external worldly accolades. In the end we ecperience bitter disillusion and are imbued with a deep sense of failure. In Dying to Wake Up we are exposed to evidence of a spiritual aspect to our lives; the possibility of deeper understanding of our predicament here on earth, a light shown on our suffering. Mostly, this wonderful book gives me a pathway to open my spirit and begin healing, growing emotionally and progressing towards true understanding of a loving God, our creator and true parent. I am filled with pure joy.
I liked the book, don't get me wrong...but I gave it only two stars because it seemed incomplete in several ways. The "meat" of the book, while interesting didn't really give the reader much information to hang on to. Perhaps because I have read about so many of these experiences, for so many years, and believe them to be completely valid, that I actually take the whole premise of the book for granted. The end of the book left the reader hanging as to how the writer actually changed his life other than simplifying his materialism and his focus to become a kinder, gentler person. He made it clear he made a career change but was very vague about his new career direction actually entailed.
My husband and I both read this book because we are interested in the subject and reside in Bakersfield. When my husband finished the book, he looked up at me and stated, "He's still sure full of himself." My thought exactly! I think something happened during his surgery and after, but I'm not convinced EVERYTHING occurred as written. He also claims to have "given" away his 10,000 sq ft mansion. Well, in exchange for it he received a 5,000 sq ft house in the same neighborhood. He still has a huge home. We also learned from people who actually know the author, that he mainly practices his healing in wealthy areas of Los Angeles.That said, the book was compelling reading, but don't get sucked in.
Dying to wake up though rather terrifying in one respect could be regarded as one of the most important near death stories written. It relates to almost every issue that can arise in relation to questions of the afterlife. I call it terrifying as one of the issues is Rajiv Partis encounter with hell. However his cry for help leads him to be rescued by his father from that situation. He encounters events he understands occurred in his previous lives (reincarnation) he reaches the being of light Is told what he should do to rearrange his life and does so. I feel this book undermines narrow minded evangelical types of religion but also gives us reason to understand that human beings who abandon positive values run risks in the hereafter if they do. I will say that I do not personally consider it likely that people who have hellish experiences are necessarily doomed forever.
