I have the complete series from Illinois to California and some selected towns like where I live, Kingman AZ. Actually living on old Route 66 makes the series come alive and I've explored many places found in the books and photo documented them. They are a good read and the photos are good quality. I highly recommend the entire set if you are at all interested in the Mother Road.

This book tells about the interesting history of Route 66 through Texas. Some of the interesting information that the book mentions is as follows: Route 66 goes through Texas a distance of 178 miles through seven counties. The town of Amarillo was actually founded twice. In 1887, James Berry laid out the town of Oneida which took the name of the nearby creek surrounded by yellow. In the Spanish language, Amarillo means yellow. In June 1888, Henry B. Sanborn began buying up land on higher ground a mile East of the town. An 1889 flood convinced Amarillo residents to move to Henry Sanborn's addition. At one time, there were three Holiday Inns in Amarillo, less than 1 1/2 miles apart on Route 66. Groom was a railroad stop laid out in 1902. It was named for cattleman Col. B.B. Groom. The town Groom thrived on Route 66 until Interstate 40 opened on June 2, 1980. The Ranch House Café in Groom had no cash register and no prices on the menu. The Ranch House only had a sign asking diners to pay what they can.
I had no idea that the short route of Highway 66 through Texas has so much! All these books are great.
