Demons are everywhere. But only Luca can see them. Having barely survived a torturous exorcism, he has since learned to keep his mouth shut about the creatures he sees lurking at the corners of his vision. When his father joins Pope Urban II on his crusade to take Jerusalem back, Luca defies his father to seek the church’s promise of divine forgiveness for crusaders. Once the journey begins, however, it becomes clear that the nature of Luca’s demons are not as simple as he previously thought. Coming into possession of a mysterious book of prophecy, and surrounded on all sides by devious relations, sinister clergymen, and terrifyingly powerful demons, Luca must avert disaster. This is a medieval crusader story by way of Game of Thrones. Your flawed protagonists find themselves set against devious and powerful opponents, the conflict more or less direct depending on the relative position of the baddie. Luca and Suzan, our teenaged protagonists, are nicely fleshed out and well written. The concept of the demons used in the book is original and interesting as well, and there is a definite sense of menace that pervades the book. But for all that, the book just couldn’t keep my interest. A lot happens in this book, and a story set against a major crusade has plenty of exciting things going on, but there just wasn’t much sense of excitement for me reading the book. Despite the sense of dread I mentioned earlier (a feeling like waiting for the other shoe to drop), I simply didn’t feel any suspense or tension as the plot moved along. So in sum, the historical details are great, the protagonists well written (though every other character is pared down to two dimensional sins), and the demonic aspects are interesting. But the book just never took off for me.An advance copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest reviewI really wanted to like but by the time I was about 1/4 of the way through it I was so bored and started skimming. From what I can tell I didn't miss much because most of the book is just them wandering through the desert. I mean I understand that that's what most of the Crusades was, a lot of wandering around interspersed with killing people, but with a book you need to do some kind of time skip or invent a new problem because it gets really boring really quickly. Also I think the characters were supposed to be like late-teens but they acted like pre-teens so I kept going 'who is letting these children do this' only to remember oh yeah they aren't actually children. The characters in general and even the romance angle was severely underdeveloped, which there is just really no excuse for in a book that is almost 400 pages long.I did like the concept that all of the fake religious relics actually had a demon attached to them, but then it seemed like it wasn't just religious relics it was literally any old thing that anyone had at all so I'm not sure if it was actually supposed to be a commentary on worshiping things that really have no value or not because it was never really expanded on except to say that hey there's a lot of demons around. Also we never really get any background on the book or just answers as to WHY for anything. I like the message that the Crusades were horrible and fueled by the greed of men and you know, not that God actually wanted them to kill all those people, but I felt like the plot wasn't fleshed out enough and it just couldn't hold my attention.

In the 11th century, in the time of the Crusades, the young Luca de Falconi is anything but ordinary. Born with the ability to see demons, Luca hides who he is and what he can do. When his father joins the Prince on the Crusades, Luca finds his way to the holy pilgrimage, not satisfied on staying behind to take care of their estate. Taking only a secret book written in a cryptic language that his father gave him, Luca embarks on a journey that will reveal secrets, corruption and evil lurking in the shadows. When a mysterious girl named Suzan joins him, he realises that he isn’t alone; Suzan has powers of her own. Together, they have to discover the secrets of the book and stop the unknown plan of demons as the crusaders make their way to Jerusalem to free it from the Saracens. This novel brings everything together perfectly: romance, adventure, loss, magic, change and history. The descriptions are incredibly written. From the vicious, violent confrontations to the harsh conditions of the Crusades through hot sand, burning sun and lack of water, they served as a reminder that even though we don’t talk about them any more, it was still one of the biggest bloody periods in history. The descriptions of the sights and ancient places are mesmerising and the way Jerusalem is portrayed is breathtaking. It’s definitely a place that I would like to visit for its rich history and architecture. The plot is complex, fast-paced and clues to understand the book of whispers are revealed in a good pace; not a single moment of boredom from this historical journey. The romance between the two main characters is beautiful and it complements the story-line perfectly. The way I interpreted it was, even in the darkest moments, there is always something good that should be kept and fought for.An amazing novel that I highly recommend! This review was originally published on NetGalley.
