About the Author

Catherine Fletcher is a historian of Renaissance and early modern Europe. Her first book, The Divorce of Henry VIII, brought to life the Papal court at the time of the Tudors. She consulted on the Golden-Globe-winning TV miniseries Wolf Hall and regularly broadcasts for BBC radio. She is Associate Professor in History and Heritage at Swansea University and has held research fellowships in London, Florence and Rome.

This book thoroughly covered the familial struggle for succession among the potential candidates for the first Medici Duke, an honor made open to them by the circumstances that re-installed them to power in Florence and by virtue of their then powerful Medici Pope. The author's thesis that the African/Italian illegitimate son of a previous Medici Pope was always considered a prime candidate for the family's elevated post is proven with many facts, some suppositions and a lot of anecdotes. The thesis looses some credibitlity because of this constancy It is as if the author can't believe the reader believes her argument. There are also far too many data points to back up this constant defense, making the argument tiresome. A good editor was needed but otherwise a good exploration of the brief life and fame of Allesandro Medici, may he rest in more peace than life afforded him.

Really poor writing and an endless and unnecessary trail of forgetable names and doubtful guess work. Let's face it this guy had a dull life and no one has cared to write about him, but made up possible stories and then hedged the guess work.

I spent a considerable amount of time in Florence in my youth and was really interested in learning more about this Medici. I was disappointed. I did learn every item listed in his wardrobe, how many and what kind of attendants he had in his entourage when he traveled and what they served their honored guests at meals. Long on details and short on action. Lots of Papal intrigues, child brides and poisoning a of course. I did learn a lot about the man but the read was a slow crawl.

Interesting topic, but really more of a New Yorker article. Not much known about his early life.

Very informative for me. I read this then moved on to Brunelleschi's Domeand other books dealing with theMedici's history.

Catherine Fletcher, in "The Black Prince of Florence," brings sixteenth-century Italy to life, while at the same time raising pertinent questions for the twenty-first century on the immutability of race.Alessandro di Medici was the illegitimate son of the last of the line of Lorenzo the Magnificent. When his father died of syphilis at the age of twenty-six, Alessandro and a cousin from a cadet branch of the family were raised out of obscurity by powerful relatives (two of them Popes) to be groomed to take over the family's leading role in the Florentine Republic. Alessandro, being the younger, was destined for the Church, but his cousin was made a cardinal in his place, and the task of governing Florence fell to Alessandro.Alessandro's life was short, like his father he died at twenty-six although in his case Alessandro was murdered by a jealous cousin, but magnificent. He became the Duke of Florence, married the daughter of Charles V, the Hapsburg Holy Roman Emperor, and enjoyed wealth and power, plus a close connection to the Holy See. Looked at through the lens of the twenty-first century it seems incredible that a black man, reportedly the child of a slave or servant, could have risen so high in Renaissance society.One of the most intriguing things about this book is Fletcher's discussion of Alessandro's heritage. In Renaissance Italy race did not have the same impact which we know. Alessandro's low birth was much more important, and in the scheme of things not that important once his family decided to back him, than his race. It seems that race, although noticed, had not yet become the significant marker which it carries in our own day. Fletcher's insightful musings on this topic make for one of the most interesting parts of this history."The Black Prince of Florence" is well worth reading, you won't look at Renaissance Italy in quite the same way as you did before.I received an ARC from the publisher and NetGalley for my honest opinion

The essays are literate and informative, although a bit repetitive. The plates, largely, are way too small to investigate any aspect of the paintings and do not convey the subtle genius of Martin. I bought this fully at half price and feel I generously overpaid.

This is a wonderful book. The art images are superbly photographed and the very subtle paintings are shown with great clarity and beautiful detail. I highly recommend this Agnes Martin chronology of key works by this sublime artist.

I already have Agnes Martin- Paintings, Writings, Remembrances - and this book, which coincides with the Agnes Martin retrospective, is a wonderful companion volume with thoughtful essays and a great selection of Martin's works. Very reasonably priced too.

Ravishingly beautiful catalog of the works of this elusive painter and graphic artist. Capturing her almost mystical drawings and paintings was not an easy task, but the authors have succeeded brilliantly. I'm looking forward to seeing a retrospective of her works later this year.

Awesome quality of print, paper is great and the color of the pages add a warmth that goes perfectly with Agnes' work.Beautifully written, variety of authors add a lot to the diffs points of view of AM's works.

As a young adult woman recently diagnosed with ADHD, I bought several books to help me try and understand my life in this new frame. This was the first book I started reading. My spirits fell, however, as I realized through the first few chapters that Dr. Barkley would probably tell me I don't have ADHD.I was a bright child and didn't start doing poorly in school until high school. I don't drive aggressively. I am capable of planning, it just takes me longer than most and sometimes the system breaks down. I don't get "bored" doing repetitive tasks (in fact I tend to enjoy them because it means I can daydream). According to Dr. Barkley, this means it is less likely that I have adult ADHD.In fact, at the little mention Dr. Barkley makes of primarily inattentive ADHD, he actually spends more time explaining his newly ideated disorder "sluggish cognitive tempo," which shares a lot of characteristics with ADHD-PI but seems to involve a more hypoactive personality than a "flighty" one. From other sources, there doesn't seem to be a lot of evidence that this is actually a separate disorder. Above all, he can offer no advice about how to deal with this nor the case of when you're in a gray area between ADHD and not-ADHD -- a sidebar implies that if you don't fit his criteria perfectly, you must be ascribing your normal failure to meet very high standards to a mental disorder you do not have.However, other sources indicate that ADHD of a significant impairment level in women can look different from that of men -- and they tend to have ADHD-PI -- and Dr. Barkley does not ever mention this, as far as I can tell. To quote one review of scientific studies, "Knowledgeable informants (eg, families, teachers, colleagues) may be more likely to overlook ADHD symptoms in women and girls and are therefore less likely to refer them for diagnosis or treatment. "Nothing I can find in this book seems to mention how much of the research he relies on was done on adult women. I'm going to look into this further as well as report back later on whether I find his suggested coping mechanisms helpful, still. In the meantime I hope to find a different resource that will reflect my own experience better.In short, this book may help you -- but don't be discouraged if you don't match it perfectly. I didn't let myself get discouraged, and now I have a diagnosis and my life has improved considerably with treatment.

As a psychologist who specializes in ADD in all age groups and as a person with ADD myself, I recommend this book to every new adult ADD patient that I see. Soon after it came out, a patient of mine said that he'd read plenty of books that described what ADD is, but this was the first one that really told him what he could and should do about it. I tell patients that medication is only a part of the answer, the rest is changing behaviors that can increase or decrease your chances of success and that this book will help them to do that with some very practical and down to earth strategies. Because of this I try to keep copies of it in my office to sell them at cost, so they'll have it when they leave the appointment. In the last two weeks I have recommended it to 5 or 6 undergrad and law school students.I also point out to them Dr. Barkley's exceptional standards for his own research and for the evaluation of the research of others. His care in presenting results is refreshingly old fashioned, almost quaint in this age of overblown self promotion, such as when he shared his adult ADHD criteria that were eventually published in his master work, "ADHD in Adults: what the science says"[2010], at a Cape Cod workshop in 2006. The results were preliminary at the time and he cautioned us that they had only been validated on a population of males from western Mass., or something like that. We all had to chuckle a bit and at the same time time appreciate how rare and refreshing it was to see such conscientiousness in a researcher; first and foremost Russ Barkley is a scientist and the reader can be confident that this book is based on real research, not just someone's opinions.Lastly, I like the layout of the book. It follows a format that's similar to the 'for dummies' series in that it is well organized with a detailed table of contents and index, as well as visual highlights such as boxes of bullet points, highlighted tips, etc. I tell my patients that it's very 'ADD-friendly' - that they don't have to read it front to back in a linear fashion, but that they can skip around and still get a ton of useful information from it.

There are lots of tips and examples of what has worked for others. The one thing that really annoys me is they spend a lot of time trying to convince you that you really do have ADHD. I already know. I wouldn’t be reading this book otherwise. I felt like it was a waste to tell me how important testing is or that medication can help. How about the chapter that tells you to remember to have fun and laugh at your diagnosis. I’m sure it can help some but I found it tedious. At least the first quarter of the book annoyed the heck out of me. “Here is a list of symptoms. Do they sound like you? I’ll tell you how to work on that later. Here’s another reason testing is important.” I wanted to skip all of it but he sprinkles good to know tidbits of data so you can’t. I thought it was funny that at just past the halfway point of the book he give you tips to stick to reading something you hate. I could have used that early on and it might not have taken me 6 weeks to reach that point.I bought the kindle version of this but I think it would have been more user friendly to have the physical book. There are a lot of places to answer questions and give your thoughts and it was a bit tedious to keep opening up a note to type them out. It would also be nice to be able to flip though later and just glance at your answers without having to go into the notes themselves and open them one at a time. I just bought a copy for a family member in paperback and I’m going to suggest that he fill out the answers in pencil or better yet on a post it so he can use more space or if his answers change as he gets older. He’d a teen now and I thing this would really have helped me out in high school.

This was an enjoyable read for me and was the first book I ever read by Liane Moriarty. I also bought the husband's secrets and big little lies.

Which should probably tell you something. My neighbor recommended this one and I was a little hesitant at first because I normally read fantasy and sci-fi. I was immediately "sucked in" and couldn't walk away for the first eight chapters. I had to force myself to be responsible and productive... which didn't last long. It took me less than 24 hours to devour the entire thing.Alice, Elisabeth, and Frannie are so rich and complex they practically jump off the pages and join you in your living room. Between journal entries, letters, and memory flashbacks, these women become people you could see yourself meeting for coffee. I can't say I laughed, but I definitely sniffled with my eyes watering more than once. Happy sniffles, sad sniffles, "oh my dosh" sniffles... this book has them all.I hate reviews that contain spoilers, but if anyone actually reads mine I feel obligated to say this:If you are a woman that has struggled with getting pregnant, staying pregnant, or realizing you'll never have the chance to try... this is an incredibly emotional read. I suggest a large box of tissues and your favorite comfort food or drink close at hand.It was well worth it. This book has left me a little sadder, a little wiser, a little more grateful, and a lot more appreciative of the blessings that I have rather than concentrating on the ones that I don't.Read it. You won't be disappointed.

Have you ever had a reader's block? You pick up book after book, read a few pages, sigh, and put it down again. I simply could not stay interested in any book I started. What Alice Forgot plucked me out of my rut. It caught my attention and kept my attention. A thirty-nine year old Alice hits her head at the gym and wakes to discover that she is ten years older than she thought, is in fabulous physical shape, has three kids, and a marriage that is ending. Alice's perspective on things since she has lost her memory on her life, her relationship with her sister, her neighbors, her friends and most importantly her husband were so eye-opening . It is amazing what insight you have when are ten years younger. I loved the character of Alice and how she used her new found wisdom.

I liked this better the first time around -- not really sure why. What bothered me this time was how the ending was completely unraveled in the epilogue. No explanation, no details which would foreshadow it. It's like the author just stuck it in there to tie everything up nicely (and too perfectly, with some stereotypes thrown in) for those of us who couldn't tolerate what we thought was the conclusion. I felt throughout the story that Alice would be changed by her experience and we would've seen more of the old Alice remaining after the memories returned.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD: [Instead, my hopes were dashed as it seemed she lost all memory of the whole period of time when she had amnesia (ha, now there's a statement for you!), and just became cold and mean again......UNTIL you get to the epilogue, that is. Also I should mention, we were built up that there was some horrible betrayal by the husband that caused their split...but there really wasn't. Plus some big secret about Gina...which never really materialized.] END OF SPOILER----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I wasn't too crazy about being jerked around like that. And things seemed way too rushed towards the end....unrealistic and thrown together.That said, I did love the whole premise of the story -- which made me reevaluate my own life through the eyes of Alice the amnesiac. Have I too changed that much over the years, even become somewhat hardened? And do I have things I can work on improving - without having to go through some kind of traumatic brain injury?! So for that alone I'm glad I read this book a second time.First read: 4-stars (Liked it a lot)Re-read: 3-stars (just Okay)

The premise is the best part of the book and, if you've gotten this far, you already know what it is... Alice bumps her head and regains consciousness only to find that 10 years have passed her by. She is confused, doesn't understand why relationships have changed, and has no clue about her 3 kids.Alice's story is told in third person, but there are two other characters who write their own first-person account of the situation. The other characters' accounts are interesting but mostly help to break up the monotony of Alice's constant confusion.Unfortunately, the author doesn't quite seem to know how to wrap things up. Does Alice regain her memories? Does she figure out how to move on with 10 years of her life missing? Will the husband re-fall in love with the new Alice? Will she hate him of she ever regains her memories?The author had the opportunity to give Alice depth and dimension, especially at the end, but I got the sense that she was coming to the end of some pre-determined page count and had to wrap up the story quickly. It's really too bad. The writing was zippy and easy beeezy. But the end was sudden - and then completely invalidated by the epilogue.I like chick lit as much as the next gal and but the ending left me disappointed.

Imagine waking up in the hospital and finding out that you've "lost" 10 years of your life! How do you even start to piece your life back together?! I found that I thought about Alice after I read a few chapters, and long after I finished. This is the third book I've read by Liane Moriarty. Each one was different and I enjoyed them all! They are great book club selections!

This is a book for someone who want to write a completely formulaic, overly repetitive paper that will pass a high school exit exam. This will teach you how to write a thoroughly average essay with such a rigid structure that there is no room or place for actual thought or expression.Also, it suggests you develop your ideas and THEN go find research to support it. That is NOT learning. That is scouring the web for confirmation bias. I suppose you will pass the test, but you WILL NOT be writing well.

I'm not going to describe the book in details. I am not its author, right? But in this book, you really will find effective methods of writing essays for you, and it will not be boring, old-fashioned templates. This book helps to logically realize how from the boring college papers you can go to brilliant papers! I hope that doesn't sound ridiculous and you understand what I mean – THIS BOOK HELPS. That's all.The author of the book talks about how important it is for a student to present well-structured essays. And this position is proved by each essay sample presented. Some parts of the book can be boring. I mean if you are looking for a guide to write a particular type of essay, for example evaluation one, then probably other parts will be not interesting to you. But it is a little minus as for me.Previously, I wrote two sentences of an essay and then stuck not knowing what to do and did not think that I would someday write a decent paper. Now fears are in the past, and knowledge I got from this book is structured in my head. So, I would recommend this book.

The book offers simple and accessible advice on essay writing - from analysis essays to narrative ones. Also, a lot of vivid samples on different topics that inspire are analyzed here. And the book itself is like the guide. If you like the idea of writing essays better than everyone else, you should read it.

I skimmed through this book in two days after I purchased from Amazon. It's well written and I am hopping to using it for my next classes. Another review will follow after this fall. Overall, I do recommend this book to students who are planning to start college or graduate schoo
