Not well written, needs editing at least, in my opinion. It was annoying and tiresome to try to plod through this book. It was as if someone tried to compile information from other sources, add a few more words and sentences to item which had the effect of making one lose interest. I'm glad it was free and that I did not spend money on it.

Too short. Not enough information. Needed to give more specifics on things that pertain to pet needs and common issues like parasites, infections, etc.

Poor grammar, and no references. Doesn’t appear credible.

Good beginning info, but no recipes, which is what I was looking for. A good resource if you are just learning about using EO on your pet.

I’m just looking at oils for myself and I found the book... so together my pets and I will feel better

The Lost Book of Enki: Memoirs and Prophecies of an Extraterrestrial God, by Zecharia Sitchin

Review

"The story is compelling, drawing readers into the world of extraterrestrials, gods, and ancient events in a way that seems a combination of reading that daily paper and indulging in popular fiction. Reading The Lost Book of Enki is a truly unique, intellectual, and pleasurable experience to recommend to customers looking for something a little different." (R. John Allcorn, New Age Retailer, March/April 2002)"This book is another brilliant example of Sitchin's scholarship. I found it exciting reading, and give it my highest recommendation. The Lost Book of Enki . . . has an impact that will generate discussions all over the globe." (Don Ecker, UFO Magazine, April-May 2002)"...this is really one interesting book....a very intriguing topic." (Morgaine, Circle of Stones, July, 2004)"An epic tale of gods and men . . . challenging every assumption we hold about our past and future." (Branches of Light, Issue 30)

From the Back Cover

FICTION / MYTHOLOGY Will the past become our future? Is humankind destined to repeat the events that occurred on another planet, far away from Earth? Zecharia Sitchin’s bestselling series, The Earth Chronicles, provided humanity’s side of the story--as recorded on ancient clay tablets and other Sumerian artifacts--concerning our origins at the hands of the Anunnaki, “those who from heaven to earth came.” In The Lost Book of Enki, we can view this saga from a different perspective through this richly conceived autobiographical account of Lord Enki, an Anunnaki god, who tells the story of these extraterrestrials’ arrival on Earth from the 12th planet, Nibiru. The object of their colonization: gold to replenish the dying atmosphere of their home planet. Finding this precious metal results in the Anunnaki creation of homo sapiens--the human race--to mine this important resource. In his previous works, Sitchin compiled the complete story of the Anunnaki’s impact on human civilization in peacetime and in war from the fragments scattered throughout Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, Hittite, Egyptian, Canaanite, and Hebrew sources--the “myths” of all ancient peoples in the old world as well as the new. Missing from these accounts, however, was the perspective of the Anunnaki themselves. What was life like on their own planet? What motives propelled them to settle on Earth--and what drove them from their new home? Convinced of the existence of a now lost book that formed the basis of ancient Sumerian texts holding the answers to these questions, the author began his search for evidence. Through exhaustive research of primary sources, he has here re-created tales as the memoirs of Enki, the leader of these first “astronauts.” What takes shape is the story of a world of mounting tensions, deep rivalries, and sophisticated scientific knowledge that is only today being confirmed. An epic tale of gods and men unfolds, challenging every assumption we hold about our creation, our past, and our future. An eminent Orientalist and Biblical scholar, ZECHARIA SITCHIN (1920-2010) was distinguished by his ability to translate ancient Sumerian and other ancient texts. He was a graduate of the University of London and worked as a journalist and editor in Israel for many years before making his home in New York City.

I was teary upon finishing this book. Seems to me Sitchin distilled all his careful translations of the Sumarian cuneiform tablets into this heart-felt epic tale. This is his idea of what Enki might have dictated. The introduction to the book is well worth the price of the book in itself! This rendering of the tale of the Anunnaki stay on earth goes far beyond the simplistic branding of bad (Enlil) versus good (Enki). Maybe Sitchin gives these "gods" too much "humanity" given the ruthlessness of Anunnaki behavior here. On the other hand, the complexity of the questions and problems they faced merits more than a shallow, single sided view. And certainly the story must go beyond dry scholarly translations. This is the epic story of humankind's origins. Even if not yet entirely complete, it more satisfactorily answers so many unanswered questions as to who we are, why we worship "gods" and why we have royalty today than any other story I've come across. For those who criticize Sitchin's work as being inaccurately translated from the tablets, let them publish their story of what they think the tablets say. Sitchin has put his work thoroughly on display. His is a coherent rendition. It serves to enlighten us to our origins. What do the critics have to offer? Buy the book. Read this epic tale and let it move you to deeply ponder what it means to you as a human being.

Sitchin hit it out of the ballpark with this book. I really like the way it's organized. Each chapter begins with a summary. Then Sitchin gives his translation of the ancient Anunnaki story about the development of humans from upright walking creatures from the South Africa region of the gold mines. The need was to develop slave workers to replace the Anunnaki's grinding toil in the gold mines. After "shars" of hard labor and rebellion looming in the mines, the promise to the Anunnaki Command was to provide workers to relieve them. As the book promises, many of our questions about the creation of humans are answered. There is a helpful glossary in the back to help keep names etc. straight. In a related interview, Sitchin said that he translated over 800 texts, proving an accumulated, in depth knowledge-base of work was used to complete his offering on the historic epic on the creation of mankind. WOW, finally after having so many questions on the topic of Genesis' two "creation of man and woman" stories, I finally have some answers that Bible scholars refuse to ethically address. It puts the Garden of Eden and Adam and Eve's expulsion under the microscope. Religion has always BLAMED Eve for being sinful and causing the separation from "God," but here you will find there is a whole lot more of the story to learn about. There might be nay-sayers about this book's presentation, but those skeptics will never come close to the depth and breadth of Sitchin's knowledge. For anyone who is really serious about understanding how and why and by whom humans were created, I absolutely suggest this book become a part of your biblical resource library.

I've searched my entire life for answers to the age-old questions: Is there a God? Why does God allow suffering? How do you explain the technology used to build the Great Pyramid in Egypt? Was there ever life on Mars? Is there truth to the evidence of intelligent life existing or having existed on the Moon? If there is a God, how could he/she create genetically defective creatures? Better yet, why? How did the Asteroid Belt form? Was there a Noah's Flood and if so, was it Divine Intervention as the Bible claims? This is the first book that actually makes sense! Finally, after a half century of seeking the Truth. Here it is. For all you 'seekers' out there, before you read anything else, get this book. You won't be disappointed.

One of the best books I've ever read!HIGHLY reccomended if you want the truth of our civilization and planetary history, as well as confirmation of where modern religion came from, and doubtless evidence that modern religion is all a crock of $#!+ and hogwash that was simmered for the last 3 centuries, and finally put on boil. Don't believe me?Read the 12th planet by the very same former CIA author and follow it up with this book. If you still haven't read enough, check out the end times book as well as the rest of sitchin's work.These/this book(s) are/is guaranteed to change how you see your world!

I LOVE THIS BOOK!! I have read all the others, but this one...Enki goes into great detail about how humanity was made. Blows the Bible out of the water!! You get a first had account from Enki, and that's brilliant. The language is a little challenging at times, but...with re-reads and great logic you can understand it. I had been searching for how Humans were created and the Bible never answers that. It also makes sense now as to why the Biblical "Single" "God" has some kind of personality disorder. Christianity and Catholic ways have too many problems and inconsistencies for me, and so many other people I know. This book, and the Earth Chronicles make SENSE. Reincarnation is not discussed, but it doesn't really have to be. That's more of an Inner Awareness and Buddha explains it very well. So, if you're seeking a LOT of answers that many Bibles all over the world don't seem to answer...read this!

This book was very well written and easy to understand. Once reading the first few pages, the rhythm of Sitchen's writing style just flows effortlessly through the readers mind. I connected with this book in a closed loop fashion where the story played in my mind like a movie while I read each page. Sitchen's unique ability to translate the Sumerian tablets opens up a pre-biblical account of man's creation according to the God who orchestrated it. This was indeed a great experience and it offers another interesting view of where we come from and where the biblical stories originate from.

Review

“Beautifully written, John’s book is an intimate and revealing memoir of a long and diverse music career and the ups and downs of life on the road. We’ve each had a complicated and thrilling journey since our high school friendship sent us off into the world.” —Steve Martin, banjo picker, actor, and writer  “John’s terrific, funny, moving book makes you feel like you are right there with him on some of the most famous stages in the world, in the top recording studios, and on the never-ending road. It makes you feel that an amazing successful career in music and show business is totally within reach—as long as you can play the banjo, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, and guitar brilliantly.” —David Mirkin, producer, The Simpsons  “Nitty Gritty is one of the greatest bands and gifts music will ever hold. John McEuen doesn’t know how not to be honest . . . as a player or an author. You’re going to love this read!!” —Garth Brooks  “John McEuen was a breathtaking prodigy when he made his bones in the Southern California music scene of the early seventies. This book chronicles the realization of that early promise and the challenges of a professional musician’s life on the road.” —Linda Ronstadt  “The road tales are extremely entertaining, but John’s depictions of off-the-road time spent with family are extremely entertaining too. Compelling, candid, hilarious, and heartwarming, The Life I’ve Picked by John McEuen shows he’s not just a great musician—he’s also a hell of a writer.” —Randy Poe, author of Skydog: The Duane Allman Story  “John McEuen has been a hero of mine since I first saw him flying around the stage with a fiddle at a Nitty Gritty Dirt Band show in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. A key member of that legendary band, solo artist of renown, radio host, producing great projects—all the while touring the world as an entertainer and influencer. . . . The Life I've Picked is a fun and poignant read. I thought I knew about John, but there is oh so much more to learn in this thrilling ride.” —Joe Bonsall, The Oak Ridge Boys  An “enjoyable, conversational memoir.”—Booklist Online"I wouldn't want to have to count how many interesting stories small, medium and extra large that appear in John's long life in music, but they sure make for one fine book." —Elmore Magazine "The Life I've Picked is a wonderfully entertaining and impressively informative read from cover to cover." — Midwest Book Review

Ordered my copy early, and just got it a couple days ago. First thing I did was look at all the photos, then dove in. Can’t say enough good things about the book. It really took me back. I decided I wanted to play mandolin when I heard it on Mr. Bojangles, when it first came out. I was probably about 7 years old. I’d later cut my musical teeth on the first Will the Circle Be Unbroken recordings. For me, John was always the stand-out, and I’ve followed his and the band’s career pretty closely. He’s quite the story teller, and I was amazed at the number of cross musical genre friends and connections he has had over the years. Friendships and connections with some of the Greats, as I see it. Hey John! I think you qualify as one of them too! I was impressed with the book’s honesty, but fairness. Especially regarding issues with, and poor treatment from now former band mates. I couldn’t help but feel for John, who worked his butt off to achieve his dreams. The book was also witty and funny. I was lauging out loud more than a few times, often thinking, “Man, you couldn’t make this up!” I’ve really enjoyed the book immensely. Highly recommended. My only disappointment is that it didn’t come in hardback. Thanks for sharing your life John! You are an inspiration to the rest of us front porch pickers out here, and dammit, you’ve had a Wonderful Life! Hope to see you out on the road soon!

I LOVED THIS BOOK! It was a great look back at my growing up years, musically. Honest, funny, sometimes sad. John takes us through a Forrest Gump kind of journey with the many musicians and celebrities he has met along the way. John defines himself as a "banjo nerd". He was always trying to be accepted by the cool kids. Well John, from one music geek to another, you made it! YOU are the cool kid now. Thanks for re awaking my love for Bluegrass. Love ya", Theresa Berweiler

Full disclosure: John's an old friend and played on two of my albums. That said, this is one of the best music autobiographies I've ever read. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that when you KNOW the author, you're less inclined to gush--but the beauty of this book cannot be denied.Unlike some music autobiographies, there is no debilitating addiction problem here--other than music itself. Sure, there are moments of titillation and surprise; juicy tidbits, moments of high hilarity and I'll admit I was moved to tears more than a few times. If you're familiar with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band--you'll love this look behind the scenes. But if you don't know their work, you'll still love the ride (and, dare I say, feel motivated to get at least of couple of their early albums such as Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy, Stars and Stripes Forever, Symphonium Dream--everyone has their favorite, mine is Uncle Charlie, I consider it The White Album of Country Rock). This book should be read by anyone contemplating a career in music--or the arts in general. McEuen's talents are many, but they also include razor-sharp business acumen, ambition and a dogged sense of entrepreneurship--something his bandmates failed to adequately appreciate. There is acrimony and there are issues that must be addressed across 50 years of nonstop music-making. This is McEuen's opportunity to have his say and he does it fairly yet pulls few punches. He paid a personal price for pursuing his dream (divorce, sacrificing time with his kids)--but still managed to raise a fine, super-talented family and retain his sanity and sense of humor. That's rare in this business. He name-drops out of necessity (it ain't braggin' if it's true) and yet his humility is never far away. American life is a constant series of reinventions. Few people have been able to pull that off like John McEuen: late in life he branched out into TV/Film scoring and quickly garnered an Emmy-nomination. He also won a Grammy for producing Steve Martin's banjo album The Crow as recently as 2009.I can't wait to see what this banjophile dynamo does next.

As a longtime NGDB and John McEuen fan I was eager to read this book. But his life has crossed paths with such interesting people, including many, many very well-known artists in the music industry, and he has had such crazy, fun, unlikely experiences along the way, that I think just about anyone, fan or not, would have a hard time putting it down. Aside from being a great musical talent with a storied career, John is a wonderful story-teller, and his story was one worth telling. I love this book.

For any fan of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this is a cautious read! You are led into a world that I simply didn’t know existed within my favorite band. However, knowing that every band goes through the artistic self changes that afflict musicians, artist, chefs...and nearly all creative talents, it shouldn’t have been surprising that these issues affected NGDB.Regardless of the disappointment that “partners, brothers & friends” is much closer to fantasy than reality, this book is typical John McEuen story telling, which he masters brilliantly at both NGDB shows of the past and now his own road show. The stories always left me wanting more! The Disneyland adventures with Steve Martin to the months filming “Paint your wagon”, you just know there are more stories untold. All in all, I always felt the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band created the background music of my life’s story, they’ve been there since day one with me, and I saw John just last month performing his new show. A tremendous talent on stage, a tremendous story teller by way of his book. While sad for fans, it’s just a passing of time! Like knowing you may never hear Jimmy Ibbotson sing “Ripplin Waters” again...things move on! And in John’s case, things move forward.

Must read for NGDB and/or McEuen fans like me since 1967 Golden Bear era. It answers all the questions in a well written bitter/sweet history of John's rise and the band's sink in the dismal swamp.

My daughter is getting her masters in counseling and is reading this for a class. She rented this book, but will probably guy it to use as a reference..

I love this book because it has good advice and it’s easy to read. There are plenty of examples of dialog. I keep this and work. Sometimes I just open it up and read a couple of paragraphs. It helps me. The title is also a good reminder. I want to keep building bridges, not burn them down. Words work for me. This book has helped me refrain from using destructive language. I didn’t read it cover to cover. I just open it up and read parts of it. The first time I borrowed it from the library. I wanted a copy to of my own to read from time-to-time.

I needed this book for my communication class and am enjoying it. I am grateful that I bought thru Amazon. I just wish I could have had it sent directto Chiang Mai Thailand.

Building bridges to be able to communicate to others, to build our communication skills when talking to others from daily conversation with family our conversations the way we communicate with our children, spouse, sisters, brothers, mother, father; neighbors, kids in the neighborhood, professionals, religious elders and others in community leadership.

This! This book should be required for all interpersonal communication and/or comm leadership courses. Self-learners should also read this. It's got great information.

The book came as expected when expected - I was very happy

Rented for a class in a Masters program. A lot of valuable information. Was expensive earlier in the year, now that prices have gone down a little I will purchase for reference in my library:-)

Wonderful and insightful book about communicating with others in various situations. Rub some dirt on it and walk it off.How many times did coaches say that? You have to tough it out, never show that you are hurt.We all have heard those words (as a coach, I said them).Even when it came to head injuries, it was downplayed. Now imagine being a racecar driver, modern day gunslingersand the closest thing to being a ground bound jet fighter pilotthere is, (racecars now have black boxes to calculate g-forces in wrecks),and your name is Dale Earnhardt JR, son of The Intimadator. After a very hard wall hit during a tire test things start going down hill rapidlyvision issues (eyes going right, objects going left), sleep issues, nausea, no balance, and you are afraid to say anything to anybody for fear of being labled "damaged goods".All of those things happened to Dale Jr.That is only the beginning; More wrecks came, more concussions , worse symptoms, longerlasting issues, mood swings, and overwhemling fear. Concussions, the horror word in sports. The thing no one wants to talk about. The carreer endingtaboo topic.Dale Jr. went down that rabbit hole and tells all in this book.I am a retired Paramedic and a soccer coach, so I am well informed on the subject of concussions,Dale Jr. lays it all out for people to see and hopefully become more aware of this type of injury.Outstanding story...

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is one of the most intriguing personalities in professional stock car racing. He's amassed one of the largest fan bases NASCAR has ever known, a "Junior Nation" that rallied around him after the death of his famous father in 2001. Yet, for all he's endured, he's never lost his sense of humility, and for all his popularity, has maintained a rather private, sometimes shy persona. Even those who've interviewed Earnhardt haven't succeeded in truly understanding who he is, what motivates him, and what he's endured. And that's what makes "Racing To The Finish" such a remarkable and refreshing book. What Earnhardt and ESPN's Ryan McGee have accomplished here is an honest and humble depiction of perhaps NASCAR's biggest name. It would've been easy for Earnhardt to write about his entire career from start to finish, his victories on and off the track, and to put a smiley face on the way his career ended. But, as Earnhardt himself says in the book, that isn't this story."Racing To The Finish" focuses almost exclusively on the most difficult chapter of the driver's career from 2012 through 2017, when a series of concussions began to catch up with him. It almost reads as a confession of sorts, an explanation for why things played out the way they did. He expresses regret over not telling those close to him about the effects he was feeling, goes moment by moment through his recovery, and clears up several misconceptions about his recovery and his decision to ultimately step out of the driver's seat. He even provides notes he kept to himself as he tracked his symptoms, described with such detail that it will get the reader to examine his own motor functions.Contrary to what one would expect from a book by a NASCAR driver, this is less of a story about the sport and more about today's understanding of concussions. What was most surprising was the revelation that there is a whole body of medicine geared toward overcoming concussion symptoms, that they involve exercises and training instead of invasive surgery, and that these methods are becoming more effective as the years pass. This was fascinating in light of the ongoing issue of CTE in the NFL, and the high-profile tragedies of players like Junior Seau. This makes Earnhardt's story even more of an inspiration, not simply to race fans, but to those dealing with similar conditions - there is help, and people should go and seek it.By the end of this book, you will understand as best any of us can the pressure Earnhardt felt to perform, and why he had to do what he did those final six years in elite competition. I left with an even greater respect for the man, and his bravery in sharing this story with others. Couldn't recommend it more.

I know you needed to quit when you did and i understand that, this book helps with coming to terms with it on our side, this side that misses you most. You are doing awesome in the booth too!! Thanks for EVERYTHING!

You don't have to be NASCAR fan who's followed Dale Jr. The entire time he raced to love this book. He tells his story to you so you understand why he retired. I saw and witnessed the crashes, I was always so scared for him, hoping he'd be okay. If he stopped racing after his father passed no one would of blamed him, but he kept going. For the race world then himself. But to kept racing feeling so badly shows his love and passion for the sport. To bring awareness to head trauma so others can find help. As a avid horseback rider in my youth competing in barrel racing ,I took some nasty spills. I struggled in school a lot and makes me wonder if maybe that was the reason? Makes a lot sense now and luckily I don't have any lasting effects. But if I had gotten a proper exam then maybe my high school days wouldn't of been so rough? The book makes you really look back in life and go maybe if? The importance of not waiting, to get help and admit. This ain't right.Dale Jr. I have always been your fan and always will be. In or out the car your a class act. I'm proud to wear your number. Always will be. Happiness always.

This book is a humble and honest insight into the life of an individual who has likely carried more fan expectations than anyone in sports. There may be certain personal benefits in telling of certain events that had not previously been told but it is clear this is not the intent of this book. The story reveals Dale's considerable growth as a person and the acceptance of responsibility in using his talents to help others. All the best Dale, on the next Chapter!

There are some books that carve out a small niche of reality and then devote themselves to explaining that particular bit as free from error as humanly possible. There are other books that aim at a sweeping reformulation— or even a new beginning—to a larger realm of human thought. Most of these gain little traction as this sweeping view turns out to be based on facile analogies that do little to actually further the arts and sciences. Foucault’s Order of Things, agree with it or not, is one of the most successful modern examples of such a magnum opus. The work attempts to explain the path of Western thought from the fall of the Renaissance and beginning of the Classical age up to the twentieth century while simultaneously illuminating the subconscious notions that undergird the sciences. An Amazon review is not the place for a sophisticated discussion of Foucault’s success or lack thereof. However, while enriched with an incredible erudition I found Foucault’s postmodern take on empirical sciences more asserted than proven. But it was a joy to wind through the labyrinth of modern Western thought with Foucault as a guide. Whether he has truly discovered the unconscious roots of the sciences and whether his corresponding call for a metaphysics of language to serve as the foundation of human thought is the right path or not, his vast influence, especially in the academy, means that he cannot be overlooked. One should also note that few people have the knowledge or the ambition to attempt Foucault’s project of an archaeology of ideas. If, ultimately, his thought has had somewhat of a pernicious effect on academic life it is not the result of a failure of heart or imagination. It is simply that Foucault’s archaeology is such a vast undertaking that being a pioneer he was bound to mix error and truth.Perhaps the best recommendaton I can make of this book is that I plan to read the Archaeology of Knowledge. A strong, but cautious, recommendation to all intellectuals.

"Between language and the theory of nature there exists therefore a relation that is of a critical type; to know nature is, in fact, to build upon the basis of language a true language, one that will reveal the conditions in which all language is possible and the limits within which it can have a domain of validity." (p. 161)There's no need to beat around the bush: The Order of Things is, bar none, the densest read on my shelf to date. Philosophy tyros steer clear; an entry-level text this is not. To say that this was as difficult to read as it was to understand would be a heavy understatement. Snippets patterned after the one above would frequently invite two- and three-peat readings to absorb before moving on to the next, equally demanding line of Foucaultian esoterica. Michel Foucault, writing in the French philosophy tradition, is touted as a librarian of ideas, and his works demonstrate such canonical breadth that they are surely not intended to be consumed in isolation. Indeed, you had better have a working understanding of the systems of knowledge throughout Western history if you stand any chance of deconstructing this significant opus.Foucault's acumen and seemingly bottomless knack for depth are on full display in this, his most ambitious and the one that propelled him to stardom, work. However, even with a solid grasp of philosophy and the pivotal shifts in Western thought, you must then also place these insights within the tramlines of the baroque prose Foucault has prepared. Similitudes, resemblances, representation, significations, character, the analytic of finitude, empirico-transcendental: familiarity with this repetition of terminology will be critical if one is to grok the landscape Foucault has delicately painted. The Order of Things: An Archaeology of the Human Sciences (1966) is nothing less than a genealogy of ideas, an intellectual ancestry of the Western mind. Along the way, Foucault somehow manages to retrace the entire development of science, restricting his analysis to a specific slice of spacetime: European culture since the 16th century. It is a work so daunting in scope, and so winged in its execution, that it seems to relish in keeping the mind in a perpetual state of entanglement, sputtering, caroming as you eagerly await for a resting point to collect your wits and proceed further into the well. He blinds you with brilliance, and insists that you see. Foucault ricochets between the intellectual giants of the Western world in rapid-fire fashion, traipsing from Spinoza to Descartes to Kant to Marx, Freud and Adam Smith, to Nietzsche, seemingly all while assuming on the part of the reader a dissertation-level of intimacy with each. Come prepared. As I understand it-and I am most emphatically not claiming that I do-Foucault is demonstrating that there do exist traceable patterns in the great developments of Western thought in terms of limits, possibilities and approaches to new and old knowledge, but also discontinuities and breaks from old ways of thinking. How "clean" these breaks were is of course a matter of debate. He focuses in on three domains-linguistics and philology (language), biology (life) and economics (labor)-emphasizing how the intellectual boundaries present in each historical era shaped how man thought about these venues and how they approached and reflected on new developments and discoveries that pervaded our consciousness. Whether we were categorizing or taxonomizing, articulating or deconstructing, we operated in the epistemes confined to our period of history, but also turned toward new modes of discourse as ideas emerged out of the Western world's interminable, civilizational march. There is also the niggling question of "man" and how and where s/he figures into the whole grandiose state of affairs. Foucault seems to be arguing that man, like everything else, is a historical construct, and its relation to the order of nature pivots according to developments in each area of inquiry, including but not limited to, the human sciences. That is, man's interpretation of man is a product of the historical development of the spaces that have most dominated the human intellect, viz the human sciences of (proto-)biology, anthropology and psychoanalysis, the social sciences of economics and labor, and, most intricately, the all-enveloping force of language, which is coextensive with every sphere with which we make contact. Certainly, man's shifting coordinates within the grid of knowledge and human inquiry is of special emphasis here in Foucault's sweeping manifesto. In the closing sections, Foucault hints toward a new episteme, something that is ill-defined, turbid, hazy but which carries all the signs of a break from what came before. He doesn't specify with any precision what this branching episteme consists of, or which domain(s) has largely catalyzed its brachiation, but he seems to think it is imminent as a reflection of the mid-20th century region Foucault occupied.CLOSING THOUGHTSA work like this is one which eludes classification, much like how the centerpiece of the book itself-man-resists arrangement within its relation to human knowledge. The Order of Things is simply, and not so simply, sui generis, transcending the common boundaries of empirical disciplines and even philosophy. Foucault's writing is ornate, painstakingly precise in places yet frustratingly ambiguous in others (so much so that, like me, you might desire the opportunity to stop every now and again and ask questions). I wish I could say that I grasped the book in its overarching messages as well as its more subtle analyses, but this will require subsequent readings, likely several more. If you've previously been introduced to Foucault or his French antecedents, you may be in a better position to follow along. But if you're like me, this will be a humbling read, an intellectual tour de force that incessantly reminds you how much more there is yet to learn."History shows that everything that has been thought will be thought again by a thought that does not yet exist." (p. 372)

It's Foucault. And this 2017. > There is no reason not to add this to your bookshelf. In fact, if you are only going to pick up two works by Foucault, I'd suggest this one and Discipline and Punish, though saying this aloud here might prompt the masses to freak. Side note: if you are into Borges, this is the first Foucault book you oughtta pick up.

This my third reading of The Order of Things. Twenty years ago, the first and second readings introduced me to Foucault's alternative vision of language, history, and reality. Today's rereading reinforces that earlier assessment of its immense value .

Excellent!

Solid material because everyone says so and who am I to say otherwise??

Like I'm going to get so wordy you're not going to know what I mean until after 15 or 20 pages. And guess what else: you're not even going to know what-it-is (you think "it is") you think I mean. That is, until you pull it from the gist. So just give up after trying to play this on google talkback© trying to get the meaning by playing it faster, and condencing it into digestable chunks, hoping to find a meaning in the breach. Yeah that's what kind of philosopher I am. I'm not the dialetician or the epistomologist. Im not your structuralist or a purist. If anyone can pull the meaning from my grip.

This was an eye-opener for me. Not so much that Foucault's insights are convincing, but in reading him I achieved a first glimpse of how much of the language used by academic writers conversant in "theory" is taken from this book. After a little time spent reading this, I felt more comfortable with academic writing. Not so much that I understand better what the scholars are saying, but it's now clearer whom they are parroting. It consequently lets me know where an author's allegiance lies.
