I realise now that the main theme of the four books is not really about a fantasy quest, or good vs evil, or adventure. The books' big message is about love, friendship, camaraderie, devotion, loyalty.Some readers will mention they don't care for Sam continually gas-bagging, that his brattiness, and cockiness is annoying ,and that he hogs all the pages. - but to my mind Sam is The Story (capitalised). He is the hinge, the centre-piece.Every character in the story has a strategic and important place revolving around Sam. I love Ryan's fierce and undying love for Sam, Gary is his usual beautiful glitter-drenched snarky self, Tiggy is lovable, Kevin is delightful, Randall isnt as grumpy - I just want to hug them all, and for longer than a minute.I forgive Klune for pinching a few phrases from the wonderful "Until You". I guess he did it For Reasons.The tension was almost too much for me. So many times I wanted to skip to the finish to see how it all ended. The story about Sam and his loved ones trying to return their country to a peaceful place was a fun, yet often heart-stopping read. I had to go away from the book every now and then, to recharge my batteries; It was such a non-stop roller coaster ride of wit and originality that my mind needed to stop and think it all over.

With this one I soaked up every page and didn't want it to end but, it did. Then I remembered it's a book and I can always start from the beginning again lolThis book takes place after Sam returns from his time in the Dark Woods where he spent 11 months developing his magic with the Great White and the rest of the dragons. 11 months since he has been away from his home of Verania, which has now been taken over by Myrin and the other dark wizards. 11 months he has been away from friends and family. 11 months since he has been away from his cornerstone.Sam knows when he returns things are going to be different and his family and friends are all going to be angry with him. He hopes that in the end they can forgive him and understand his reason for leaving. After all he has a destiny to fulfill.This book brings the conclusion of the battle with Myrin and the darks and Sam finally fulfilling his destiny. "My path may have been set in stone, but stone crumbles, and sometimes we have to forge our own way through.”I love, love, love this book and this series as a whole. This book was a great end to Sam's perspective. I feel like part of his insane, fun, sassy posse. I traveled around with Sam and his crew and felt like part of the family. With Sam I went on adventures, was captured numerous amounts of times(really Sam you would think by book 4 you would know better lol), faced darks, listened to dreaded monologues, discovered first love, loss and heartbreak. Even though there was lots of sass there were also so many tender moments. Sam's love of his friends and family was one of beauty. We all knew Sam's story had to come to an end eventually, it has, and I love it all!*sidenote: I really look forward to reading Justin's perspective. It will be nice to get in his head and see if he actually has a personality going on. Plus we all know there will be a hefty dose of Sam in it. You know with him being Justin's best friend 5eva! )

It was written immediately after the law was passed, so I'm sure there are other places, probably government sites, that provide the more specific details of how to sign up, etc. which this book doesn't go into. I recommend it for anybody who wants to become part of the program and/or understand how it works,

A very easy way to understand the current healthcare system as well as the basics of US healthcare reform. I used it to help me understand the US healthcare system before my PA school interviews. Overall, I’d highly recommend this book for anyone that is interested in learning more about US healthcare reform.

This was great. It helped me understand the health care reform in an enjoyable manner.

Totally outdated and no longer reliable. Useful only as an historical document.

It takes time to explain the complexities of health care reform, so this was a great approach. This was much more enlightening and accurate than TV punditry. Its a surprisingly enjoyable read too.

I must say I am quite impressed Dr. Coile’s book. I have had many different all breed books over the years but this one, for total content, has become an instant favorite. It’s written so a novice can understand and yet doesn’t insult an experienced owner’s intelligence. The easy wipe off cover surface and sturdy paper will withstand heavy use from the youngest of readers.Each breed is covered in two pages, with each with a photo: one stacked and the other in a working pose or in a more relaxed natural setting. The “At a Glance” section not only answers the questions most often asked to find that family pet; but addresses specifics an experienced person might use to learn about a new breed. A judge could even use it as a quick reference guide.Books that cover all breeds of dogs usually furnish a history, a standard and touch on temperament. This book goes more than one step further. Other in depth sections are labeled "Illustrated Standard," “Temperament,” “Upkeep,” “Health,” and “Form and Function.”This lovely hard back, coffee table edition is quite heavy. Many may find a eReader version more to their liking. I love my hard cover copy but, as soon as I can, I will also be purchasing the Kindle version for quick reference.

This book has numeric ratings for major dog traits such as friendliness toward other dogs and people, train-ability, watchfulness, etc. I found these at-a-glance ratings to be very beneficial when reviewing each dog breed. It is the best dog book I've ever seen. Some complain that the book doesn't cover enough breeds. But, the trade off is that each breed includes wonderful color pictures and a long narrative of the breeds traits. Each breed has 2 pages of photos and information. If you're looking for a detailed encyclopedia of dogs, you've found it with this one.

For anyone who is interested in general information on dog breeds, anyone who's looking at either adapting, rescuing or purchasing a particular breed of dog, then I suggest you get a hold of this beautiful illustrative, informative and easy to read encyclopedia. If you're a dog lover like myself and want to learn more about these beautiful, intelligent, loyal and loving animals, you really shouldn't go passed this book.

I was simply looking fot a book for my kids to look through since they encounter different dog breeds alot. This has become my favorite because the wealth of detail and the amazing picture that are in this book was unexpected. The alternate breed names and historical information on the origins and how the traits came to be, plus temperament with children, diseases etc really made this sort of a coffee table book into a book we open for ideas on our next puppy.Getting another for a gift definitely

I had a book like this when I was a kid and loved it. I always referenced it when I saw a new dog and wanted to show everyone what i had learned. My niece loves dogs so much so I figured this book would be perfect for her. She is 7 and very smart; she may not be able to use all the info in this book now, but this is a book that can be kept for a lifetime. I still have mine! :)

Gave this book to my granddaughter, who's 8, and she loves it - knows more about dog breeds than I do now, and is much more prepared to choose a dog when we go looking. Otherwise it's also a real fun read even if you aren't actively looking for a pet because there's lots of history and other info too.

Great book for learning about dog breeds. It includes the history as well as the modern day roles. The charts at the top are particularly helpful for comparing and contrasting. My only complaint is that some popular breeds, such as pit bulls, are left out.

Have the first and second Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, so wanted to update and get the third edition since new breeds were added.Just hope they keep using AKC show quality pics (There are a few dog breed pics shown that aren't the greatest representatives of the breed).But the info is great for any dog lover!

I realize a "brief" history can't be thorough, but I found this history to be very disjointed. It skips around in time, losing any feel for the sequence of events, plus it repeats points already covered (as often as 3-4 times!). It does, however, do a good job of highlighting the background conflicts between US and British generals as well as the errors of judgment by the in Allied Supreme Command that created the opportunity for the German counter-attack.

One reference to Patton was interesting; his absence earlier on in the invasion was not to lead the fictious army the Allies pretended to build in England (though that was the objective of thar effort) but because of his highly controversial slapping the prior summer of a soldier with PTSD whom Patton considered a coward. Weak effort and not really worth the time. Wikipedia would be more valuable.

I usually get two guide books for every trip I take, Lonely Planet and DK (recently I started to try out Fodor's. I don't think I like it because its layout or format is kind of confusing. Maybe I'm not used to it yet). Compared to DK, LP is much more detailed in my opinion, but DK offers more photos. I felt compelled to write a review because I found DK is getting harder and harder to read due to its extremely small font, especially the description next to a photo or illustration). Maybe I'm getting old and need reading glasses (in fact my husband said he couldn't read anything on DK, lol). After reading it for a while, my eyes just start to hurt and I don't feel like reading it anymore. I don't know why the publisher make the font so small. I would imagine older people would have a hard time reading it. BTW, I'm 41-year-young :)

I really like eyewitness travel guides. I got the same book when I went to Rome 15 years ago. I am using it again on this trip. One thing I did notice, that in 15 years my eyesight has declined. And it's very difficult to read the small print. Oh well, maybe one of my younger travel companions will be able to read it for us. Hey, Eyewitness! If you read this, please give us Kindle versions. Makes it much easier to travel with your guides. That way we don't have to lug around these heavy (1.5lb) books. Then I could also adjust the text size. (This is why this guide loses 1 star in my review)

Great Pictures. Information seemed dated.Large heavy book. Better information available in the Fodors book which is a pound less. The pictures are beautiful and this would make a good coffee table or bookcase book, but not a good book to travel with. I couldn't find operating hours quickly for attractions. It annoyed me that I could not find the info in a logical place.

The indexes are so inadequate that the book is only minimally useful. Why on earth is it too difficult to do them well? I am required to search and look for cross indices and find after standing on the street looking for references to what I am looking for and finally then find only the most minimal information on what I am looking at? I found the guides far more frustrating than useful. I would not buy these guides again when I travel.

This was so handy and easy to use. Love the way the book is organised by areas of the cities. Really liked the foldout map with the color-coded walking only streets. The book fit easily into my purse. The travel tips in the back, specific to Budapest were spot on and very helpful. Having the book added a lot of confidence for us navigating a big city on our own. Will most definitely be buying similar Top 10 books for other travel destinations.

I have been using this DK rome book for the last 15 years, so I know all the versions. This 2019 is a complete revamp. I suggest the 2018 version. The changes are: no more glossy pages (soft matte paper is used); no restaurant section in the back (they are interspersed on every page); elimination of almost 50 pages of history; a language section that is hilariously small print (I put on glasses to see it and still could not). In short, the changes to this book make it rather ordinary, and even hard to use. Even an image of the Pantheon mislabels where Raphael's tomb is. As someone who ordered this book annually, I can just say that the beauty, style, and colorfulness of this edition has been destroyed, and I urge all buyers to think twice before purchasing the 2019 version. I can't imagine going to Rome without some introductory history, and the editor of this new version must have been literally out to lunch when approving the new version.

Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel are my favorite series of travel guides. DK produces the most detailed and beautiful photographic guides. I have one for every country or city I’ve visited since first discovering them 18 years ago while living in the UK. I still buy the books for trip planning (and the gorgeous visuals), but now I also purchase and download the Kindle version of their 'Lists of 10 Top' guides for the specific location to lighten my luggage load.

COMPLETELY outdated. I looked up a few things online for further information and of the handful I checked, all but one were closed -- and had closed years ago.

I bought three histories of Ireland at the same time, and this is the one I read cover to cover (the others are buried in my stack of to-reads, because I couldn't quite get into them... but maybe I'll still read them someday). It is written in an engaging format that mixes the history of the author's exploration of Irish history with the history itself. It spends a satisfying amount of time exploring Ireland's pre-history and very early history, which is what I wanted to know the most about. The authors explain how we know what we know about Irish history, meticulously separating known fact from conjecture from pure mythology, and weaving it all together in a storytelling format that is hard to put down.The book does contain a few sections that are rather repetitive. It feels in places like there was either a failure of editorial oversight or perhaps a failure between the two authors to communicate regarding what has already been said. Those places bog the book down a bit, and I did skim quite a lot when I'd hit a spot like that.But at its best, which is most of the book, this is one of the best histories I've read, both informative and enjoyable.

Very informative book. I read this book before leaving for Ireland as well as when I was there. The beginning was very good and started you off at the beginning of Ireland as best they can tell. Very interesting I thought how the author works in the early Christian monks as an influence in Ireland history. I had to pleasure of hiking up to Queen Maeves (Not how it's spelled in the book) tomb which was very cool. This is near Sligo which I highly recommend. I enjoyed how the book explains the culture of the Irish people and why they are the way they are. If you've participate in any of the DNA ancestry matches this book will explain why your ancestry tree is so busted up even at this time in history. I don't think they planned it that way it just shows it to you by following the timeline of events. It reads half science journal, half history with a splash of politico.

This is the first book of a two book series published in consort with a PBS & RTE (Ireland) television series. It is a highly readable book based on the authors travels around Ireland where they visited many historical sights, often accompanied by locals or experts in Irish history and culture. The authors take the position that much of the "Irish" history we take for granted often was manufactured by monks, or Kings who wished to enhance their stature at the time. The book debunks many commonly held theories, which some readers may find off-putting. However, it also shows the population to be welcoming and open in their intermingling of pagan and Christian beliefs. The segments on religious communities is quite interesting given their internal organization, relationship to their surrounding communities, and oftentimes extreme geographic locations on remote islands. I did not fully understand the ongoing impact the Viking raids and eventual settlements had on Irish society until I read this book. The Viking influence is particularly fascinating. I found this to be a good read and look forward to reading book two in the series.

This is a book companion to the PBS series covering the history of humans in Ireland until the arrival of British rule. True to its origins, the book does at times read like clips from a documentary, yet is nonetheless a thorough history of the early Irish. The book provides some prescient reminders and re-looks at the world especially regarding the Irish Sea being a communications channel rather than an ocean barrier, the reverse of what I often imagine a sea to be. Fans of dendrochronology will be pleased to see tree-rings providing some useful insights into early human history. Nevertheless the book follows the well-trodden chronology of early peoples from stone to bronze to iron. But thanks to the particularly interesting periods of early Irish Christianity this book is far from dull. It reminds us of the remarkable aspects of Irish history including the sea-faring saints, the scholars and the Book of Kells and Saint Patrick himself. Interestingly the book questions with useful examples the purported myth of the Celtic invasion of Ireland. Rather the book claims this is the aggrandisement of the revivalist writers of the 1890’s such as Yeats, much like the Gaelic that is forced on the modern Irish. I give the book three stars because the documentary style and excerpts from many experts is not a good replacement for a strong central narrative voice – the historian, or original research. The book does provide however, a good history of the spiritual aspects of the Irish people without getting bogged down in mystical Celtic nonsense. But it does seem that it is not just the modern Irish tiger that is materially obsessed and prone to absurd elitism.

I read this in preparation for a vacation in Ireland. It's not a page turner but it is very interesting and gave great context to what I saw in my visit. Ireland is deeply rich in culture and heritage, and this book gave me a lot of color during my visit. Still, you really have to be there to wrap your head around the megalithic tomb at Newgrange and the impact of the Vikings on Dublin. Definitely worth the read if you're a history geek.

The authors wrote as engaging a history as I have ever read...on any subject. The story they told really pulled me in. The chapters on some of the major players, like St. Patrick and Brian Boru, were detailed. Their discussions of Brehan Law, the role and place of women in ancient Irish society, and the Irish church frequently elicited the "so that's why that is" response. Their pronunciation guide was most welcome. (Here's a tip, pronounce only the letters that aren't there.) Of course, now I am going to have to buy the documentary that accompanies the book.
